Plant Pressing Workshop Series

*NOTE: registration is for all 4 classes in the series: June 6, 7, 13 and 14. Please only reserve a spot if you are able to attend all 4 classes.*

Learn how to make museum-quality preserved plant specimens suitable for research, education, and the arts under the guidance of botanist, Daniel Atha.

Gain the knowledge and skill to develop your own herbarium and finish the course having prepared a variety of dried, mounted and labeled specimens. You’ll learn how to select the best material for preservation; how to press, dry, and arrange them; how to format a good specimen label; and how to mount plants using archival materials.

All materials will be provided. Please bring water and a notebook to take notes.

PLEASE NOTE: foraging or collecting specimens for any purpose is prohibited in the Preserve. This includes plants, seeds, wildlife, rocks, etc.

Daniel Atha retired from the New York Botanical Garden after nearly three decades of research. He has conducted botanical field work in all 50 states of the US as well as Vietnam, Bolivia, Mexico, Belize, South America and the Caucasus of western Asia. He has published a book on the plants of Belize, over sixty scientific papers and has discovered two plant species new to science. In 2020, he published a botanical inventory of New York’s Central Park. His work in research, conservation and art has appeared in the New York Times (twice), the Wall Street Journal and the the journal Nature. He lives on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and is currently writing a book on the historical ecology of Central Park.
