Sandy Hook’s Shipwrecks & Life-Savers

Join a park ranger in a rare opportunity to learn about the U.S. Life Saving Service and explore the Life Saving Station at Sandy Hook.
Meet the Park Historian and learn how navigational aids and life saving techniques were used to save people from shipwrecks in the New York Harbor Area during the age of sail and early steamship era. Also view U.S. Life-Saving equipment used to rescue crew and passengers during the 1878 to 1915 time period. Near the end of the program, the group will car caravan three miles south to the Life-Saving Station at Spermaceti Cove built in 1894. Visitors will explore the inside of the building where lifesavers lived and looked for ships in distress. Free!
