Foraging Edible Invasives
April 30, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
If you can’t beat ‘em, eat ‘em!
Non-native plants are typically regarded as pests and are removed and discarded as waste, but what if we were to rewrite this narrative and view them as a source of food instead?
Join naturalist, Greg Rosen, for an introduction to the basics of gathering edible “invasive” plants. The first of a three-part series, this program will cover the basics of foraging with an emphasis on ecological relationships and responsible practices.
We’ll walk, talk, and observe in the field so please wear comfortable closed-toed shoes and bring water and a notebook to take notes.
Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3, which will provide additional perspectives on the matter, i.e. from a culinary and herbalist standpoint.
Let’s tend the land, support biodiversity, and nourish ourselves in the process!
Greg is an educator at Groundwork Hudson Valley and Steering Committee member and garden manager for Roots & Wings. Inspired by his passion for foraging, food sovereignty, and edible landscapes, he founded Forest Folk, a nature education organization in Westchester, NY.
Meet in the Visitor’s Center courtyard. In the event of rain, the hike will be postponed; you will be notified via email at least 2 hours in advance.
Max: 20 people
PLEASE NOTE: foraging or collecting specimens for any purpose is otherwise prohibited on state property, including the Preserve. This includes plants, seeds, wildlife, rocks, etc. This is a unique opportunity to learn about foraging under the guidance of an expert.
