Urban Beekeeping
June 24, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
This workshop is designed for beginners and will cover the basic biology and anatomy of honey bees as well as apiculture essentials such as colony care, honey extraction, parts of the hive, beekeeping equipment, and disease prevention. We will review the mechanics of manipulating the different hive components as well as cover strategies for colony management throughout the cycle of the seasons.
Instructor Toby Sheppard Bloch has been stewarding bees together with his daughter since she was a first grader — on his roof, in community gardens, and at the Queens County Farm Museum. He’s endlessly fascinated by how bees solve collective action problems in transparent and democratic ways, advancing the common good of the colony while providing ecosystem services critical to food production and reproduction of other species. Toby hopes he can be as useful to the world and his community as bees are.
