SUMMARY:CSA Supper Club: Reclaiming Ancestral Cooking
DESCRIPTION:Explore the origins stories of CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture)as we unpack and taste test the foods inside.\n\n\nJoin us in the garden and around the table to explore how we can reclaim ancestral cooking by recovering the principles that shaped our ancestors’ relationship with food rather than simply recreating historical recipes. Participants will examine how traditional practices such as cooking with the senses\, eating seasonally and locally\, and preparing food with intention can be integrated with modern nutritional knowledge to create a more connected and nourishing approach to cooking. Together\, we will explore what it truly means to eat in relationship with the land\, the seasons\, and the people we feed\, while gaining practical ways to apply these ideas in everyday life.\n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: \nJournei Bimwala is a clinical herbalist\, foraging practitioner\, nutrition health coach\, and educator dedicated to helping people build meaningful relationships with the natural world through food and plants. Drawing from her experience in foraging\, herbal medicine\, and community education\, she teaches participants how to reconnect with the landscapes they inhabit by making what is unknown known and what is known accessible. Her work weaves together traditional ecological knowledge\, modern nutritional understanding\, and cultural wisdom to inspire people to see food not only as nourishment\, but as a pathway to health\, connection\, and stewardship.\n\n\n\nCooking\, sharing\, and storytelling through the harvest of the season. \nHistory\, place\, and imagination are all deeply rooted in what and how we grow and eat. \nEach Friday evening\, this supper club gathers around ingredients of the week–produce grown in the garden and food from our local CSA. A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is rooted in the idea that community members share in the risks and rewards of farming. By committing to a season’s harvest\, we support farmers through the lands’ and our current food system’s uncertainties and in return\, receive food that is grown in integrity and largely outside of the current extractive and exploitive\, harmful food systems. \nTogether\, we’ll gather to deepen our relationships with the sources of our food and our empathy for the people’s whose hands that food has passed through. \nThrough collaborative cooking\, recipe-sharing\, and conversations around the table\, we explore the cultural\, ecological\, and personal dimensions of food. Drawing inspiration from our kitchen’s stories\, cookbooks\, and the week’s harvest\, we’ll discover how the simple act of preparing and sharing a meal can connect us more deeply to land-workers\, food-workers\, and to the land theirself. \nThis is a free drop-in program. Come to every class or come to one or two that you are available for.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. Our learning garden has grass paths\, and the entrance is through a gate with a small\, raised entrance. Our tables can be lowered/raised\, and we have several backless benches or stools. Our kitchen is in regular use\, and while we try to cook without peanuts\, much of our cookware is shared and we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment. We have a first aid kit\, and the closest AED is in another building several yards away. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nOur closest bathrooms are a building away\, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available\, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. We are not a scent-free zone\, and because herbalism classes take place here\, cannot guarantee that the site will be clear of any essential oil smells. If you have needs not addressed here\, please reach out to Mallory Craig at mcraig@thehort.org.

SUMMARY:Art in the Garden: Pocket Posies
DESCRIPTION:Create a petite and pocket-sided bouquet with a handful of garden blooms for your kitchen table\n\n\nJoin is in the garden among the blooms to create your own pocket full of posies–a minerature bouqet to brighten the smallest of corners. Working with a few select blooms from the garden and from NYC’s flower market\, we’ll create our own pocket-sized floral arrangements\, learning about regenerative flower farming and the power of flowers to convey meaning through symbols and metaphor. \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Nicole Smith of A Tribe Called Flowers\nNicole Smith is the founder of A Tribe Called Flowers\, a community-centered project rooted in the belief that flowers—and the joy they bring—should be accessible to everyone. What began as a simple hobby of arranging blooms blossomed into a calling: sharing beauty\, encouragement\, and small moments of brightness with people who need it most.\nNicole describes herself as a flower enthusiast. Through A Tribe Called Flowers\, she creates handcrafted bouquets that are donated\, free of charge\, to local shelters\, rehabilitation centers\, and communities across the city. Each bouquet becomes a gesture of care\, a reminder that someone is thinking of you\, and a spark of joy delivered through flowers. \nAs a nonprofit organization\, all donations to ATCF directly fund the making of these bouquets\, allowing Nicole to continue spreading beauty and connection one arrangement at a time.\n\n\n\nGrounded in the garden\, join us to critically and creatively engage in a diversity of artmaking techniques that open us up to deeper dialogue on place\, our relationships to our lived environments\, ecological concerns\, and contemporary culture. Learn meditative and mindful drawing\, printmaking and sculptural techniques\, scientific observation with plant portraiture\, nature-inspired intuitive artmaking and mixed media exploration\, and other various practices from botanical and ecologically-focused contemporary artists to create works of art to nurture your relationship to the garden.\n \nImmerse yourself in the learning garden\, greenhouse\, and across Riverbank State Park’s green roof overlooking the Hudson River to create artwork that is rooted in place and in partnership with plants.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:CSA Supper Club: Let's Eat (Exchange Authentic Thoughts)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the origins stories of CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture)as we unpack and taste test the foods inside.\n\n\nJoin us for CSA Supper Club for collaborative cooking\, recipe-sharing\, and conversations around the table as we explore the cultural\, ecological\, and personal dimensions of food. \nGather around our garden table for a community supper where simple food creates space for meaningful conversation. With our guest chef Brandy\, each month\, we explore one everyday food through a short Food Spotlight\, uncovering the ideas and simple frameworks that make healthy eating approachable. Then we gather around the table to share a seasonal meal and exchange authentic thoughts about food\, wellness\, culture\, and life. \nJoin us as the table to slow down\, connect with others\, and rediscover the power of sharing a meal. \nToday’s Menu: The Anatomy of a Sandwich \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Brandy Cochrane\nBrandy Cochrane is a culinary educator for PPMNY\, a licensed Food for Life Instructor through the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine\, and a chef\, recipe developer\, and author. She is also the co-founder of Plant Candy\, a food company committed to getting you just as excited about plants as you are about candy. Her fascination with plant-based living came after reading The China Study and converting one of her grandma’s cake recipes with butter beans and dates. Once she saw that it worked\, she went down a rabbit hole exploring ways to leverage the textures of plants and building in familiar flavor profiles to create food that anyone could enjoy. A graduate of Rouxbe’s Plant-Based Culinary Program\, Brandy has used her knowledge to introduce this healing lifestyle in a way that’s fun\, accessible\, and creative. Her cookbook\, Plant Candy Gathering\, shares simple recipes that can be enjoyed by the plant-committed and plant-curious alike. Her latest book\, The Plant-Based Handbook\, which simplifies the benefits and resources for sustaining a plant-based lifestyle\, was released in 2024. Brandy wants to create a narrative that a splash of creativity\, a dash of openness\, and a lot of spice can make plant-based living enjoyable and fun!\n\n\n\nCooking\, sharing\, and storytelling through the harvest of the season. SUMMARY:Art & AgriCulture: Toning Cyanotypes with Food Scraps & Culinary Herbs
DESCRIPTION:Transform cyanotypes with kitchen scraps and herbs\, revealing the hidden stories carried by everyday meals.\n\n\nExplore the world of cyanotype toning with kitchen scraps and culinary herbs from the garden as we learn how to transform the ingredients of everyday meals into photographic traces from meaningful food memories. Together\, we’ll begin in the garden to create cyanotypes from plants gathered in the garden and transparencies of photos of the plants and people of our greenhouse community. Then\, we’ll be guided through the process of toning our cyanotypes to shift the colors and chemistries of our prints\, and work with plants like hibiscus\, lemon\, coffee\, teas\, marigolds\, and various kitchen scraps; reflecting on how these plants find their ways to our kitchen tables to our art\, collaborating us throughout the process. Join us to talk about the materiality of the plants we imbibe and create with. \nParticipants are invited to bring their own transparencies or pressed plants they feel akin to\, but a number of plants and already printed transparencies are also available. To print your own transparencies\, see this tutorial\, though many printing places will print for you as well.) \n\n\n\nPhoto Courtesey of artist Nadia Bongo. Find more about Nadia’s work at https://www.nadiabongo.com/\nNadia Bongo is a teaching artist and translator. She has earned a Brooklyn Poets Fellowship. Her writing and/or photographs have appeared in Apex\, African Voices\, Litro online\, Solstice\, The Citron Review\, Taos journal of Poetry\, Blue Mesa Review\, and elsewhere. She was a Teaching Artist in Residence for Washington Square Park Conservancy. Her co-directed short poetry film\, Wandering In Beauty\, has been selected to festivals worldwide\, and will be on view for a group exhibition at BRAC.\n\n\n\n“Another thing we lost is culture. . . look at the word agriculture. We lost that connection. And so now it’s going back to the culture of agriculture. Why do we grow the food that we do?” – Karen Washington\n \nWhy do we grow the foods we do? How is culture tied to our local foodways and agricultural systems? What stories of nourishment are you hungry to tell? What creative acts are you being called to digest? In this weekly series\, explore various techniques and practices introduced by visiting artists who will lead us in expressing our relationship to food\, agriculture\, and the histories and stories that shape how we connect with our foodways. \nThrough various artmaking techniques like bookmaking\, printmaking\, collage\, sculpture\, natural-pigment making and painting\, alternative photography processes\, participants will create artwork that begins to answer the question: Where is the culture in our agricultural system? \nThis is a free drop-in program. Come to every class to build on your skill or come to one or two that you are available for. Explore your relationship to food and agriculture and the ways our food systems can connect us more deeply to our local ecosystems and communities.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:CSA Supper Club: Herbal Agua Fresca
DESCRIPTION:Join us around the garden table for cooking\, sharing\, and storytelling through the harvest of the season\n\n\nJoin us for CSA Supper Club for collaborative cooking\, recipe-sharing\, and conversations around the table as we explore the cultural\, ecological\, and personal dimensions of food. \nCool down with a refreshing agua fresca (drink) made with cooling herbs and fruits from the CSA and garden. \nJoin us to make your own cooling syrup to use for your own agua fresca at home. \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Diana Arellano\nDiana is a clinical herbalist raised in the southside of Chicago with roots in Durango\, Mexico now based in Brooklyn\, NY. For the past 15 years\, herbal medicine has played a key role in Diana’s healing journey and she has been working closely with plants\, teachers\, and curanderas to continue deepening her knowledge of plants. She loves to teach single herb workshops to highlight the extensive magic and medicine that any herb holds. During her herbal workshops\, Diana empowers participants to use their intuition and senses to guide their own relationship with plants. Through establishing a reciprocal relationship with plants\, we’re reminded of the connection and aliveness in ourselves and in plant beings.\n\n\n\nCooking\, sharing\, and storytelling through the harvest of the season. \nHistory\, place\, and imagination are all deeply rooted in what and how we grow and eat. \nEach Friday evening\, this supper club gathers around ingredients of the week–produce grown in the garden and food from our local CSA. SUMMARY:Art in the Garden: Rose Beads
DESCRIPTION:Create Your Own Charm Bracelet Made of Beautifully Fragrant Roses!\n\n\nDid you know that the Latin word for rosary is rosarium\, meaning “gardland of roses”? Centuries ago\, people were practicing the craft of turning rose petals into clay to create beads for their rosaries. \nBorrowing from this tradition\, we will create our own rose beads to craft our own charm bracelets to wear roses like we wear our hearts on our sleeves. \nWhile we wait for for our beads to bake\, we’ll sip on rose tea and reflect on the work of our hands\, and how we may choose to be in veneration of plants\, communing creativly with plant kin through our artistic practices. \nIn a season of Shein\, let’s examine the root of our adornments and that cost to our ecologies. The best custom couture is of the soil\, of our hands\, of our community. Join us to consider where our plants come from\, not just through our foods\, but how we we adorn and beautify ourselves. \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Jules Jīvanī Ruby Kulaya \nI focus on ritual\, routine\, and divinity across nature & culture in my art and holistic wellness services. Through a long-term background working in theater\, I became disenchanted with the industry- as time went on… particularly\, post Lockdown – it wasn’t the storytelling I thought I signed up for. I found there was a lack of intention in the processes\, and a lot of waste\, adding to the climate crises When I began to seriously set aside time for the care of my spirit\, I began to learn\, remember – that what I was called to practice\, was already rooted in my body’s memory and ancestry. My lived experience & career has led me to an ethos rooted in advocacy & activism for the overlapping intersections of the global majority\, LGBTQIA+ and neurodiverse communities\, with a focus on mental wellbeing and resource access. \n\n\n\nGrounded in the garden\, join us to critically and creatively engage in a diversity of artmaking techniques that open us up to deeper dialogue on place\, our relationships to our lived environments\, ecological concerns\, and contemporary culture.

SUMMARY:Recipes & Rituals for Community Care: Bathing in the Essence of the Garden
DESCRIPTION:Slow down\, breathe\, allow your senses to open\, listen to the messages from nature.\n\n\nJoin us with certified Forest Therapy Guide Lori Klamner to explore how the concept of bathing in the essence of the forest and forest bathing can be integrated right here in our community garden spaces in our very urban landscapes. \nTogether\, we’ll take a slow walk with invitations to notice the shapes of leaves\, moving our hands to outline the shapes that call to us\, and noticing how it feels for our feet to kiss the earth. Then\, we’ll find a sit spot and allow our minds to focus on parts of the garden that speak to us. After each section of these invitations\, we will have a sharing circle and tea made from foraged and harvesed plants to practice our attention and reflection in our shared learning garden. \n\n\nYour Facilitator: \nLori Klamner is a climate activist and bodywork therapist. A native New Yorker\, she has found the Urban Forest to be a truly healing and restorative place. She trained to become a Certified Forest Therapist in 2021\, and specializes in group walks in urban parks.\n\n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to heal in community? What does it feel like to extend care—to ourselves\, ecologies\, and our shared earth? \nThis weekly series explores the role of plants in supporting both personal and communal well-being through herbal arts\, folk remedies\, somatic movement\, meditative wildcrafting\, and shared ritual. Participants are guided by guest herbalists\, healing artists\, and wellness practitioners to co-create a toolkit that not only resources individuals in caring for themselves\, but stretches our imagination and capacity to care for the collective and our shared earth. \nRecipes and Rituals for Community Care is rooted in reciprocity with land\, ancestral knowledge\, and the rhythms of the seasons.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. SUMMARY:Recipes & Rituals for Community Care: Cacao & Cosmovisions
DESCRIPTION:Working with Heart Medicine of Cacao & The Cacao Tree in Mayan Cosmovision\n\n\nJoin us to learn about the cacao tree\, exploring more deeply the sacred medicine of this plant pre-colonization by also learning about the Mayan Cosmovision through exploring the Mayan energy of the day. \nTogether\, we’ll enjoy the plant medicine that is cacao\, honor this plant’s storied history\, and re-learn some of the worldviews and cultural frameworks that can help shape more intimate reciprocol relationships with cacao. \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Vivian is a Crystal Therapist specializing in Personal & Spiritual Development. Her unique approach integrates mindset\, energetics\, and spirituality to provide a grounded wholistic approach to personal growth and empowerment.\n\n\nPhoto Courtesey of artist Vivian Arias. Find more about Vivian’s work at https://www.crystallinechrysalis.co/ \n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to heal in community? What does it feel like when we extend care to ourselves and the collective? How do plants and our local ecologies care for us? How can we care for the plants and local ecologies in return?\n \nWeave in rituals and recipes into your own self-care and community care practices through weekly explorations in herbal arts\, somatic movement in the greenhouse and garden\, folk remedies\, and other wild-crafts and meditative activities that foster a deeper connection to plants to care for the body\, mental health\, and the people you move with. \n \nEach week\, be guided by a guest herbalist\, healing artist\, or wellness practitioner who will help you create your own toolkit and apothecary for self and communal care.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine.
