DESCRIPTION:Visit the David Rockefeller Creative Arts Center at Pocantico (DR Center) during Upstate Art Weekend (UPAW)\, an annual event celebrating the cultural vibrancy of upstate New York through events and open exhibitions. \nThroughout the weekend\, visitors can view Portraits of Process\, the DR Center’s current exhibition showcasing 34 expertly crafted bronze life castings created for the American Artists’ Hand Archive using a traditional lost-wax casting technique. \nPortraits of Process documents both the physical realities and personal narratives​ of contemporary American visual artists ​through their primary agent of creative process and expression: their hands. The exhibition includes casts of the hands of Chuck Close\, Elizabeth Strong Cuevas\, Mary Frank\, Robert Indiana\, Jasper Johns\, Lucy Kim\, Maya Lin\, Toshio Odate\, Judy Pfaff\, Kiki Smith\, Ursula Von Rydingsvard\, John Waters\, and more. This will be the closing weekend of Portraits of Process. \nOn July 18 at 7:00 p.m.\, visitors can enjoy a jazz performance by multi-Grammy-nominated\, award-winning saxophonist and composer Ben Wendel and Grammy-winning pianist Kevin Hays. The duo will perform a wide repertoire of original compositions and beloved standards from the jazz canon.

SUMMARY:Ayodele Casel-Culpeper Summer Performance Series
DESCRIPTION:A performance by renowned tap dancer and choreographer Ayodele Casel\, her team of dancers and musicians\, and director Torya Beard will kick off the 2024 Culpeper Summer Performance Series at Pocantico. The group will present excerpts from works-in-process developed during their residency at Pocantico and from some of Casel’s groundbreaking and dynamic repertory work. A conversation with Casel and the creative team will follow the performance. Ticketholders are invited to stay for a reception with special access to the DR Center gallery\, currently showing Portraits of Process. \nPresented in partnership with the RBF’s Culpeper Arts & Culture Program. \nAyodele Casel\, hailed by the New York Times as a “tap dancer and choreographer of extraordinary depth\,” is a Doris Duke Artist known for her skilled and imaginative improvisation. Casel’s projects include her concert and Bessie Award-winning film Chasing Magic\, and her Drama Desk-nominated work as tap choreographer for the Broadway revival of Funny Girl. Most recently\, she and Torya Beard premiered Rooted\, a film for ALL ARTS TV\, and the acclaimed Freedom…in Progress\, a celebration of the legendary Max Roach.
