Then we gather around the table to share a seasonal meal and exchange authentic thoughts about food\, wellness\, culture\, and life. \nJoin us as the table to slow down\, connect with others\, and rediscover the power of sharing a meal. \nToday’s Menu: The Anatomy of a Sandwich \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Brandy Cochrane\nBrandy Cochrane is a culinary educator for PPMNY\, a licensed Food for Life Instructor through the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine\, and a chef\, recipe developer\, and author. She is also the co-founder of Plant Candy\, a food company committed to getting you just as excited about plants as you are about candy. Her fascination with plant-based living came after reading The China Study and converting one of her grandma’s cake recipes with butter beans and dates. Once she saw that it worked\, she went down a rabbit hole exploring ways to leverage the textures of plants and building in familiar flavor profiles to create food that anyone could enjoy. A graduate of Rouxbe’s Plant-Based Culinary Program\, Brandy has used her knowledge to introduce this healing lifestyle in a way that’s fun\, accessible\, and creative. Her cookbook\, Plant Candy Gathering\, shares simple recipes that can be enjoyed by the plant-committed and plant-curious alike. Her latest book\, The Plant-Based Handbook\, which simplifies the benefits and resources for sustaining a plant-based lifestyle\, was released in 2024. Brandy wants to create a narrative that a splash of creativity\, a dash of openness\, and a lot of spice can make plant-based living enjoyable and fun!\n\n\n\nCooking\, sharing\, and storytelling through the harvest of the season. \nHistory\, place\, and imagination are all deeply rooted in what and how we grow and eat. \nEach Friday evening\, this supper club gathers around ingredients of the week–produce grown in the garden and food from our local CSA. A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is rooted in the idea that community members share in the risks and rewards of farming. By committing to a season’s harvest\, we support farmers through the lands’ and our current food system’s uncertainties and in return\, receive food that is grown in integrity and largely outside of the current extractive and exploitive\, harmful food systems. \nTogether\, we’ll gather to deepen our relationships with the sources of our food and our empathy for the people’s whose hands that food has passed through. \nThrough collaborative cooking\, recipe-sharing\, and conversations around the table\, we explore the cultural\, ecological\, and personal dimensions of food. Drawing inspiration from our kitchen’s stories\, cookbooks\, and the week’s harvest\, we’ll discover how the simple act of preparing and sharing a meal can connect us more deeply to land-workers\, food-workers\, and to the land theirself. \nThis is a free drop-in program. Come to every class or come to one or two that you are available for.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:Art & AgriCulture: Toning Cyanotypes with Food Scraps & Culinary Herbs
DESCRIPTION:Transform cyanotypes with kitchen scraps and herbs\, revealing the hidden stories carried by everyday meals.\n\n\nExplore the world of cyanotype toning with kitchen scraps and culinary herbs from the garden as we learn how to transform the ingredients of everyday meals into photographic traces from meaningful food memories. Together\, we’ll begin in the garden to create cyanotypes from plants gathered in the garden and transparencies of photos of the plants and people of our greenhouse community. Then\, we’ll be guided through the process of toning our cyanotypes to shift the colors and chemistries of our prints\, and work with plants like hibiscus\, lemon\, coffee\, teas\, marigolds\, and various kitchen scraps; reflecting on how these plants find their ways to our kitchen tables to our art\, collaborating us throughout the process. Join us to talk about the materiality of the plants we imbibe and create with.  \nParticipants are invited to bring their own transparencies or pressed plants they feel akin to\, but a number of plants and already printed transparencies are also available. But much of the American dream mistakenly supposes that\, like a tree\, we will grow and flourish\, standing in one place…”— June Jordan\, Moving Towards Home\nHow do we preserve and sustain the stories\, cultural memory\, and legacy of our community garden spaces and our communities’ relationships to public land? Join us to egage in community archiving through photo printing\, archiving\, and collage making using recycled garden and herbs materials.\n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: \nStephanie Alvarado (they/she) is a queer disabled antidisciplinary artist\, archivist\, poet\, curator\, and cultural organizer for 20 years. Through their Fotos y Recuerdos Archive project\, they have facilitated over 40 intergenerational workshops since 2020 on photo archiving and collective memory work as a form of resistance for queer\, trans\, and disabled people of color. Alvarado currently serves on the board of The Literary Freedom Project and is co-curator of “The World(s) She Made: Composing The Radical Lives of Kathleen Neal Cleaver” as part of The Last Hummingbird Collective.\n\n\n\nGrounded in the garden\, join us to critically and creatively engage in a diversity of artmaking techniques that open us up to deeper dialogue on place\, our relationships to our lived environments\, ecological concerns\, and contemporary culture. The rest of the world dissolves.” — Thich Nhat Hanh\nJoin us for a moment to slow down for a reflective evening of tea\, and meditation. Grounding in our botanical tea of the evening of butterfly pea\, we’ll explore how this plant as a tea can help us have a mindful moment for ourselves as well as connect us to each other and our shared ecologies. Tia will share her practice with both tea and meditation\, sharing how these practices can contribute to collective care for ourselves and each other.\nTake time to exchange breath with the plants in the greenhouse\, enjoy and herbal tea to calm the body\, and rest into a guided meditation inspired by the very plants nourishing our bodies through tea.\n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Mattia “Tia” Colon\nMattia “Tia” Colon is a Master Level Social Worker\, Meditation Facilitator & Community Gardener. It is her connection to a Vietnamese Buddhist temple in The Bronx that influences and inspires her work. Tia hosts soundbowl meditation events\, and medicinal tea ceremonies with diverse groups of people across New York City. She utilizes various singing bowls and other instruments to create sound frequencies to induce a relaxing and healing atmosphere. She incorporates other nature related activities\, such as gardening and herbalism with a contemplated twist to create powerful\, unique\, meditative experiences\n\n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to heal in community? What does it feel like when we extend care to ourselves and the collective? How do plants and our local ecologies care for us? SUMMARY:Urban Garden 101 - How to process stinging nettle
DESCRIPTION:Participants will learn how to harvest yarrow and calendula. They will then weed and plant summer vegetables.\n\n\nIn step with the growing season\, beginner gardeners are invited to gain hands-on learning experiences at the learning garden and greenhouse. In the beggining of Summer\, we’ll cover fundamental principles and practices of growing plants for specific urban green spaces\, preparing soil\, designing a garden suitable for each gardener’s specific needs\, regenerative and climate-wise gardening\, starting seeds\, proper planting techniques\, and basic plant care. Gardeners in this course will contribute to collective beds in our learning garden as well as tend seedlings to take to their own urban green spaces. \nIn this class participants will harvest lettuce\, spinach\,mint\,and root vegetbales. Participants will also make bi-products from the herbs in the garden. \nRequired Texts and Resources: No texts are required. Optional supplemental readings will be given for each class. \nRegistration: Each track is limited to 16 participants per session. We ask that you kindly register prior the start of the cohort. Urban Gardening 101 is most suited for adults\, and we kindly ask participants with children to consider one of our other weekly free family-friendly programs instead.

We’ll end our storytelling session by making our own corn silk tea and sharing corn bread together\, visiting the corn kin in our shared learning garden.\n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Jasmín Durán \nNestled in the intersections of decolonization\, immigration\, youth work\, healing justice\, land and herbalism\, Jasmín’s work seeks to uplift\, celebrate and preserve the legacy of ancestral healing\, wisdom\, and technologies in the diaspora. As a child of immigrants\, Jasmín embodies a deep understanding of the challenges and joys of the migrant experience in the US. \nJasmín has a B.A. in International Relations & Food Studies from Syracuse University (2015). In 2020\, she completed a Spiritual Herbalism Apprenticeship under the guidance of Master Herbalist Karen Rose at Sacred Vibes Apothecary in Brooklyn\, NY. She has worked extensively at local community gardens and in organic farm projects abroad. As an educator\, her work is participatory\, culturally aware\, youth centered and trauma informed. Today\, she continues to support youth in NYC\, working in an anti-violence organization where she co-creates brave spaces with young people to unpack\, question\, dream and decolonize. \n\n\n\n“Another thing we lost is culture. . . look at the word agriculture. We lost that connection. And so now it’s going back to the culture of agriculture. Why do we grow the food that we do?” – Karen Washington\nWhy do we grow the foods we do? How is culture tied to our local foodways and agricultural systems? What stories of nourishment are you hungry to tell? What creative acts are you being called to digest? DESCRIPTION:Create Your own Botanical Prints Using the Alchemy of Cyanotype\n\n\nCyanotype is a cameraless photography practice widley populated in the 1840s by botanist Anna Atkins to document botanical specimens. Since\, it has become an archival process in art and science circles alike. How can we care for the plants and local ecologies in return?\n \nWeave in rituals and recipes into your own self-care and community care practices through weekly explorations in herbal arts\, somatic movement in the greenhouse and garden\, folk remedies\, and other wild-crafts and meditative activities that foster a deeper connection to plants to care for the body\, mental health\, and the people you move with. \n \nEach week\, be guided by a guest herbalist\, healing artist\, or wellness practitioner who will help you create your own toolkit and apothecary for self and communal care.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. Our learning garden has grass paths\, and the entrance is through a gate with a small\, raised entrance. Our tables can be lowered/raised\, and we have several backless benches or stools. Our kitchen is in regular use\, and while we try to cook without peanuts\, much of our cookware is shared and we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment. We have a first aid kit\, and the closest AED is in another building several yards away. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nOur closest bathrooms are a building away\, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available\, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. We are not a scent-free zone\, and because herbalism classes take place here\, cannot guarantee that the site will be clear of any essential oil smells.
