SUMMARY:80th Anniversary Talk: Battle of Leyte Gulf
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special presentation on Intrepid’s role in the Battle of Leyte Gulf by Manager of Development Content and author Mike Fink!\n\n\nImportant information: This event is free with museum admission. Please arrive at least 30 minutes early as there may be a wait to enter the museum. This eventbrite is NOT a ticket into the museum. You do not need to bring this to attend the program. \nThis year marks the 80th anniversary of the largest naval battle in modern history: the Battle of Leyte Gulf (October 23–26\, 1944). Intrepid and its air group were at the center of this epic multi-day engagement\, which involved nearly 200\,000 men aboard 282 ships spanning 100\,000 square miles of ocean. Join us on Wednesday\, November 20th for a presentation on Intrepid’s role in the battle and the experiences of the ship’s aviators and aircrew featuring Mike Fink\, the Intrepid Museum’s Manager of Development Content and author of the forthcoming book\, Intrepid’s Fighting Squadron 18. \nPre-orders available on Amazon. \nThe talk will take place in the Intrepid Museum’s Lutnick Theatre. Livestreaming of the conversation will be available if you can’t make it in person to the Intrepid Museum. View the event live on Facebook or YouTube. \n \nThis event is free with museum admission. Please arrive at least 30 minutes early as there may be a wait to enter the museum. This eventbrite is NOT a ticket\, you do not need to bring it to attend the program. \n \n \nSpecial Guest Speaker:\n\n\n\nMike Fink is Manager of Development Content at the Intrepid Museum. An avid researcher/historian\, he spent six years combing through archives and interviewing pilots and their families to uncover the incredible true story of “Two-a-Day 18\,” Intrepid’s highest-scoring fighting squadron.  \n \nAbout the Book:\n\n\n\nAt the end of their 81-day tour of duty aboard Intrepid\, the men of Fighting Squadron 18 (VF-18) were credited with shooting down more than 170 planes\, earning them the nickname “Two-a-Day 18” in newspapers nationwide. Intrepid’s Fighting Squadron 18 follows squadron members through training\, into combat\, and finally to the end of their harrowing stories—whether they took the return trip home or made the ultimate sacrifice. Drawing extensively on archival and family collections\, author Mike Fink reveals the personalities of these men and the binding friendships they built\, showcasing the powerful impact of war on those who fight it in addition to the impact of those men on the war itself. \n \nThis book will be released on January 14\, 2025.Pre-orders available on Amazon.

SUMMARY:Intrepid Museum's Astro Live
DESCRIPTION:Join a NASA food scientist to learn about developing astronaut meals for the final frontier!\n\n\nJoin us live on Facebook\, YouTube\, or X.\nThe Intrepid Museum will present a Virtual Astro Live program on November 17 at 3:00pm ET.\nFood plays a vital role in an astronaut’s day-to-day routine\, from shared personal experiences to building team cohesion and trust. While meals in space have come a long way since tubes of goo and freeze-dried cubes\, food scientists still need to be mindful of providing meals with maximum nutrition\, while also limiting their weight and packaging on long and distant missions. \nJoin us for a discussion with a recently retired NASA food scientist and author whose unique life experience of working with astronauts to plan space food and meals provides an interesting framework for stories of building teamwork\, goal setting\, innovation and leadership. Discover the development process for food systems in space travel\, how times of crisis can lead to innovation\, astronauts’ favorite foods\, and the current challenges of designing food for deep space travel to Mars and beyond. \nThe event is hosted and co-produced by John “Das” Galloway\, founder of the Kerbal Space Academy. \n \nParticipant:\n\n\n\nVickie Kloeris is a food scientist with an out-of-this-world career. She worked at NASA in space food systems for 34 years. For 29 of those years\, she served as the NASA manager of first the Shuttle and then the International Space Station food systems. She and her teams worked through the complex challenges of creating tasty\, nutritious\, long-lasting\, easy-to-prepare meals that support the dietary and psychological needs of astronauts living on the space station. Kloeris has worked with 100s of astronauts to plan their favorite meals and holiday specialty meals for space travel. \nKloeris received NASA’s highest honor\, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 2019. During her career\, Kloeris was twice awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and received the Johnson Space Center Director’s Commendation Award. \nShe earned a B.S. in Microbiology and a M.S. in Food Science and Technology from Texas A&M University. Kloeris has authored and co-authored many publications and done extensive public relations work during her time at NASA. Kloeris currently serves as President of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). \n \nAbout the Book:\n\n\n\nVickie Kloeris’s Space Bites: Reflections of a NASA Food Scientist takes readers through the many memorable moments of her career as she worked on both the Shuttle and International Space Station food systems. If you’ve ever wanted an inside look at what it’s like to assemble a sandwich in space\, produce a space food breakfast for the cast of Apollo 13\, or work side by side with astronauts as they prepare for the journey of a lifetime\, you’re sure to learn something new with the turn of every page. A charming balance of technical knowledge and human experience\, Vickie’s career memoir is a story for the scientist\, space enthusiast\, and spontaneous reader alike. \n Available for purchase through Ballast Books\, Amazon\, or Barnes and Noble. \n \nModerator:\n\n\n\nElysia Segal is the Producer of Public Programs at the Intrepid Museum\, where she brings science and history to life through artistic expression and creative educational programming. She served as the project director of the Crossing the Line research and performance residency and has created and performed a number of engaging\, theatrical experiences for audiences across the country. A NASA Solar System Ambassador and the namesake of main-belt asteroid 17795 Elysiasegal\, she co-produces Astro Live for the museum and is the host of This Week in Spaceflight with NASASpaceflight.com. \n \nHost:\n\n\n\nJohn “Das” Galloway is a science outreach communicator who specializes in live\, interactive video content. He is the creator of the Kerbal Space Academy\, where he uses video games as a tool to start science and engineering conversations with viewers of all ages\, and VECTORS Virtual Field Trips\, which brings real-time interactive video to museums\, events\, and historical locations. “Das” also serves as a host and producer for NASASpaceflight.com. \n \n\n\nFunded by: Astro Live is supported through a NASA Cooperative Agreement awarded to the New York Space Grant Consortium. \n\n\n\nThe program is also supported\, in part\, by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

She is also the first female composer to have two original musicals running at the same time on Broadway. In the operatic world\, Tesori has been commissioned by the Glimmerglass Festival twice and shares the title of being the first female commissioned composer at the Metropolitan Opera alongside Missy Mazzoli. \n \n\n\n\nEmily D’Angelo was hailed by the New York Times as “one of the world’s special young singers\,” and has continued her meteoric rise and firmly established herself as one of the most exciting and critically acclaimed artists of her generation. Called “wondrous and powerful“ by The NY Times for her recent US recital debut\, the mezzo-soprano is the first and only vocalist to have been presented with the Leonard Bernstein Award from the Schleswig Holstein Festival. A 2020 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist\, one of Canada’s “Top 30 Under 30” Classical Musicians\, and WQXR NYC Public Radio’s “40 Under 40” singers to watch\, D’Angelo made her stage debut\, at only 21 years of age.. She now stars as Jess in The Metropolitan Opera’s production of Grounded\, opening the ‘24-’25 season on September 23. \n \n\n\nModerator:\n\n\n\nDana H. Born\, PH.D. (Brigadier General\, USAF Retired) recently transitioned as the Faculty Chair for the Senior Executive Fellows (SEF) program at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) of Government\, previously served as the Co-Director for the HKS’s Center for Public Leadership and Faculty Advisor for the Black Family Graduate Fellowship for Veterans and the National Security Fellows program. She enjoys skiing\, hiking\, cooking\, and traveling… especially visiting her two active-duty daughters. \n \n\n\nAbout the opera\, Grounded:\n\n\n\nEmily D’Angelo portrays Jess in Jeanine Tesori’s Grounded\, photographed by Paola Kudacki. Jess\, a hot-shot fighter pilot has an unplanned pregnancy\, taking her out of the cockpit and landing her in Las Vegas\, where she operates a Reaper drone from halfway around the world. Jess reflects the mental health challenges that follow combat experience and the morality of death rained down by remote control. \n \nTwo-time Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori’s powerful new opera Grounded\, commissioned by the Met and based on librettist George Brant’s acclaimed play\, wrestles with the ethical quandaries and psychological toll of 21st-century warfare. Mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo\, one of opera’s most compelling young stars\, portrays Jess\, a hot-shot fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas\, operating a Reaper drone halfway around the world. As she struggles to adjust to this new way of doing battle\, she fights to maintain her sanity\, and her soul\, as she is called to rain down death by remote control. Michael Mayer’s high-tech staging\, using a vast array of LED screens\, presents a variety of perspectives on the action\, including the drone’s predatory view from high above.

SUMMARY:Intrepid Museum's Astro Live
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion about the incomparable RS-25 rocket engine: from Space Shuttle to Artemis!\n\n\nJoin us live on Facebook\, YouTube\, or X.\nThe Intrepid Museum will present a Virtual Astro Live program on August 18 at 3:00pm ET.\nNASA’s Space Launch System (SLS)\, the vehicle that will launch astronauts on missions to the Moon and eventually Mars\, takes advantage of hardware and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques originally developed for the Space Shuttle and other exploration programs. Most notably\, the vehicle uses four RS-25 engines at the bottom of the core stage. One of the most tested rocket engines in history\, they powered the Space Shuttle for 135 missions over three decades\, and will now help to propel SLS on its eight-and-a-half-minute climb to space. \nThe RS-25 is a highly efficient staged-combustion engine that combines liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen to produce 10x the thrust of even the largest commercial jet engine. Sixteen shuttle-era RS-25 engines have undergone several design upgrades to improve durability\, safety\, and performance for the first four flights of SLS\, the first of which took place in November 2022. Additionally\, NASA has contracted with Aerojet Rocketdyne to restart production of a simplified\, more affordable\, and more powerful variant that will later be used on further missions. \nJoin us for a conversation on the incomparable RS-25 with Project Engineering Scientist Helen Lewin and Project & Component Engineer Mary Kalayjian of Aerojet Rocketdyne at L3 Harris Technologies as we discuss the engine’s journey from the Space Shuttle program to Artemis! \n \nThe event is hosted and co-produced by John “Das” Galloway\, founder of the Kerbal Space Academy. \n \nParticipants:\n\n\n\nMary Kalayjian was born & raised in Los Angeles\, California and graduated from California State University\, Los Angeles where she received a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a bachelor’s degree in Astrophysics. She is currently working at Aerojet Rocketdyne as a Project and Component Engineer supporting the RS-25 Engine for NASA’s Space Launch System rocket. More specifically\, Mary has supported the development\, testing\, and fabrication of 3D printed hardware and assisted with the implementation of various new manufacturing and inspection technologies. In 2019\, her and her team members were chosen to receive the Distinguished Engineering Project Achievement Award by The Engineers’ Council for their efforts in successfully developing RS-25 3-D printed hardware. \n \n\n\n\nHelen Lewin started working on the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) Controller software team in 1987 during the return to flight effort following the Challenger accident. She then moved into flight hardware reviews\, then flight performance\, and finally flight readiness reviews. Following the Shuttle retirement\, she worked RS-25 integration and as a business analyst for RS-25. Once Artemis I was on the horizon\, she went back to flight support and worked the Core Stage Green Run test. She also led the flight support team at Canoga Park\, California for the Artemis I launch. Lewin is currently working technical issues in preparation for the next few Artemis launches\, including the changes needed for the new RS-25 production engines once the 16 heritage SSME engines complete their missions. Her educational background includes degrees in Biology\, Electrical Engineering\, and Systems Engineering.
