SUMMARY:Intrepid Museum's Astro Live
DESCRIPTION:Embark on a journey to Titan with NASA’s Dragonfly\, a nuclear-powered octocopter set to explore Saturn’s largest moon in search of life!\n\n\nJoin us live on Facebook\, YouTube\, or X.\nThe Intrepid Museum will present a Virtual Astro Live program on December 14 at 3pm ET.\n \nEmbark on an extraordinary journey to Titan\, Saturn’s largest moon! With thick hazy skies\, liquid methane seas\, and a frozen surface hiding a possible subsurface ocean\, Titan offers tantalizing clues about the chemistry that may have sparked life on our own planet. \nNASA’s Dragonfly mission will be the first rotorcraft ever sent to explore another world\, bringing science fiction to life. About the size of a small car\, this nuclear-powered octocopter will take advantage of Titan’s dense atmosphere to fly across its varied landscapes — from ancient impact craters to organic-rich dunes — all while carrying a sophisticated suite of scientific instruments. Dragonfly will land\, sample\, and discover as it searches for the building blocks of life and pieces together Titan’s complex history. \nHear from experts at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory\, the team leading this ambitious mission\, as we explore how Dragonfly will reveal the secrets of this alien moon and expand our search for life beyond Earth. \n \nThe event is hosted and co-produced by John “Das” Galloway\, founder of the Kerbal Space Academy. \n\n\nParticipants:\n\n\n\nDr. Elizabeth (Zibi) Turtle is a planetary scientist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. She is the Principal Investigator for the Dragonfly New Frontiers mission to Titan and Principal Investigator for the Europa Imaging System (EIS) cameras on the Europa Clipper mission. She also participated in the Galileo\, Cassini\, and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter missions. Dr. Turtle’s research has focused on combining remote-sensing observations with numerical geophysical models to study geological structures and their implications for planetary surfaces\, interiors\, and evolution\, including tectonics and impact cratering on terrestrial planets and outer planet satellites\, the thickness of Europa’s ice shell\, the formation of Io’s mountains\, and the nature of Titan’s landscape and weather. She earned her PhD in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona\, Tucson\, and her BS in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2021\, she was awarded the Claudia J. Alexander Prize by the American Astronomical Society Division for Planetary Sciences. \n \n\n\nModerator:\n\n\n\nElysia Segal is the Producer of Public Programs at the Intrepid Museum\, where she brings science and history to life through creative and educational programming. A NASA Solar System Ambassador and the namesake of main-belt asteroid 17795 Elysiasegal\, she co-produces Astro Live for the Museum\, and is the host of This Week in Spaceflight for NASASpaceflight.com and the Popular Science Channel. She was the project director of the Museum’s Crossing the Line research & performance residency\, and has created and performed engaging\, theatrical experiences for audiences across the country. \n \nHost:\n\n\n\nJohn “Das” Galloway is a science outreach communicator who specializes in live\, interactive video content. He is the creator of the Kerbal Space Academy\, where he uses video games as a tool to start science and engineering conversations with viewers of all ages\, and VECTORS Virtual Field Trips\, which brings real-time interactive video to museums\, events\, and historical locations. “Das” also serves as a host and producer for NASASpaceflight.com. \n \n\n\n\nAstro Live is supported through a NASA Cooperative Agreement awarded to the New York Space Grant Consortium. The program is also supported\, in part\, by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

SUMMARY:Intrepid Museum's Astro Live
DESCRIPTION:Join former NASA Astronaut Charlie Camarda who will discuss his new book “Mission Out of Control”\n\n\nJoin us live on Facebook\, YouTube\, or X.\nThe Intrepid Museum will present a Virtual Astro Live program on December 15 at 3:00pm ET.\nAfter the deaths of his friends and colleagues aboard Columbia\, a disaster that could have been avoided\, Astronaut Charles Camarda and his fellow crewmates worked diligently through their grief and many stress-filled days to return the United States to space on the next shuttle flight. This allowed NASA to once more take on the prideful mantle of success but only after paying a very steep price\, a price that seems at times to have been already forgotten but may have to be paid again unless there are changes within both the organizational structure and culture of the agency. \nJoin us for a discussion with former NASA Astronaut Charles Camarda\, author of the newly released book Mission Out of Control: An Astronaut’s Odyssey to Fix High-Risk Organizations and Prevent Tragedy\, about his role in reimagining the safety culture at the administration post Columbia\,and the valuable lessons he’s learned to pave the way for a safer future in space. \nThe event is hosted and co-produced by John “Das” Galloway\, founder of the Kerbal Space Academy. \n \nParticipant:\n\n\n\nDr. Charles Camarda is an is a 46-year NASA veteran with over 22 years of experience as a research engineer\, 18 years as a NASA Astronaut who flew on STS-114\, the return-to-flight mission following the Columbia disaster\, and 13 years as a Senior Executive holding positions within the Agency as Director of Engineering at NASA Johnson Spaceflight Center\, Deputy for Advanced Projects in the NASA Engineering and Safety Center\, and Senior Advisor for Innovation and Engineering Development at NASA’s Langley Research Center prior to his retirement in 2018. Post Columbia and prior to his launch on the next mission two and a half years later\, Dr. Camarda was responsible for initiating and leading the teams that verified the technical cause of the accident and for developing the technology that he flew on his return-to-flight mission to repair his spaceship in the event of another debris strike. \nHe is currently an adjunct professor at several universities has developed an innovative conceptual engineering design pedagogy called ICED\, which he has taught to NASA engineers and which forms the basis for his 501 (c)(3) educational nonprofit called the Epic Education Foundation\, which he founded to democratize STEM/STEAM education for students of all ages around the world. \n \nAbout the Book:\n\n\n\nAstronaut Dr. Charles Camarda has uncovered a recurring cause of accidents that no one has articulated yet—loss of a research culture that places a premium on learning and the quest for knowledge and what that means. He shows how to develop high-performing teams and networks of such research teams to solve anomalies rapidly\, which can help prevent catastrophes in complex high-risk/high-reliability organizations. \nAvailable for purchase through Amazon. \n \n\n\nHost: \n\n\n\nJohn “Das” Galloway is a science outreach communicator who specializes in live\, interactive video content. \n \n\n\nFunded by: Astro Live is supported through a NASA Cooperative Agreement awarded to the New York Space Grant Consortium. \n\n\n\nThe program is also supported\, in part\, by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature

Please arrive at least 30 minutes early as there may be a wait to enter the museum. This eventbrite is NOT a ticket into the museum. You do not need to bring this to attend the program. \nThis year marks the 80th anniversary of the largest naval battle in modern history: the Battle of Leyte Gulf (October 23–26\, 1944). Intrepid and its air group were at the center of this epic multi-day engagement\, which involved nearly 200\,000 men aboard 282 ships spanning 100\,000 square miles of ocean. Join us on Wednesday\, November 20th for a presentation on Intrepid’s role in the battle and the experiences of the ship’s aviators and aircrew featuring Mike Fink\, the Intrepid Museum’s Manager of Development Content and author of the forthcoming book\, Intrepid’s Fighting Squadron 18. \nPre-orders available on Amazon. \nThe talk will take place in the Intrepid Museum’s Lutnick Theatre. Livestreaming of the conversation will be available if you can’t make it in person to the Intrepid Museum. View the event live on Facebook or YouTube. \n \nThis event is free with museum admission. Please arrive at least 30 minutes early as there may be a wait to enter the museum. This eventbrite is NOT a ticket\, you do not need to bring it to attend the program. \n \n \nSpecial Guest Speaker:\n\n\n\nMike Fink is Manager of Development Content at the Intrepid Museum. An avid researcher/historian\, he spent six years combing through archives and interviewing pilots and their families to uncover the incredible true story of “Two-a-Day 18\,” Intrepid’s highest-scoring fighting squadron.  \n \nAbout the Book:\n\n\n\nAt the end of their 81-day tour of duty aboard Intrepid\, the men of Fighting Squadron 18 (VF-18) were credited with shooting down more than 170 planes\, earning them the nickname “Two-a-Day 18” in newspapers nationwide. Intrepid’s Fighting Squadron 18 follows squadron members through training\, into combat\, and finally to the end of their harrowing stories—whether they took the return trip home or made the ultimate sacrifice. Drawing extensively on archival and family collections\, author Mike Fink reveals the personalities of these men and the binding friendships they built\, showcasing the powerful impact of war on those who fight it in addition to the impact of those men on the war itself. \n \nThis book will be released on January 14\, 2025.Pre-orders available on Amazon.

SUMMARY:Intrepid Museum's Astro Live
DESCRIPTION:Join a NASA food scientist to learn about developing astronaut meals for the final frontier!\n\n\nJoin us live on Facebook\, YouTube\, or X.\nThe Intrepid Museum will present a Virtual Astro Live program on November 17 at 3:00pm ET.\nFood plays a vital role in an astronaut’s day-to-day routine\, from shared personal experiences to building team cohesion and trust. While meals in space have come a long way since tubes of goo and freeze-dried cubes\, food scientists still need to be mindful of providing meals with maximum nutrition\, while also limiting their weight and packaging on long and distant missions. \nJoin us for a discussion with a recently retired NASA food scientist and author whose unique life experience of working with astronauts to plan space food and meals provides an interesting framework for stories of building teamwork\, goal setting\, innovation and leadership. Discover the development process for food systems in space travel\, how times of crisis can lead to innovation\, astronauts’ favorite foods\, and the current challenges of designing food for deep space travel to Mars and beyond. \nThe event is hosted and co-produced by John “Das” Galloway\, founder of the Kerbal Space Academy. \n \nParticipant:\n\n\n\nVickie Kloeris is a food scientist with an out-of-this-world career. She worked at NASA in space food systems for 34 years. For 29 of those years\, she served as the NASA manager of first the Shuttle and then the International Space Station food systems. She and her teams worked through the complex challenges of creating tasty\, nutritious\, long-lasting\, easy-to-prepare meals that support the dietary and psychological needs of astronauts living on the space station. Kloeris has worked with 100s of astronauts to plan their favorite meals and holiday specialty meals for space travel. \nKloeris received NASA’s highest honor\, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 2019. During her career\, Kloeris was twice awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and received the Johnson Space Center Director’s Commendation Award. \nShe earned a B.S. in Microbiology and a M.S. in Food Science and Technology from Texas A&M University. Kloeris has authored and co-authored many publications and done extensive public relations work during her time at NASA. Kloeris currently serves as President of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). \n \nAbout the Book:\n\n\n\nVickie Kloeris’s Space Bites: Reflections of a NASA Food Scientist takes readers through the many memorable moments of her career as she worked on both the Shuttle and International Space Station food systems. If you’ve ever wanted an inside look at what it’s like to assemble a sandwich in space\, produce a space food breakfast for the cast of Apollo 13\, or work side by side with astronauts as they prepare for the journey of a lifetime\, you’re sure to learn something new with the turn of every page. A charming balance of technical knowledge and human experience\, Vickie’s career memoir is a story for the scientist\, space enthusiast\, and spontaneous reader alike. \n Available for purchase through Ballast Books\, Amazon\, or Barnes and Noble. \n \nModerator:\n\n\n\nElysia Segal is the Producer of Public Programs at the Intrepid Museum\, where she brings science and history to life through artistic expression and creative educational programming. She served as the project director of the Crossing the Line research and performance residency and has created and performed a number of engaging\, theatrical experiences for audiences across the country. A NASA Solar System Ambassador and the namesake of main-belt asteroid 17795 Elysiasegal\, she co-produces Astro Live for the museum and is the host of This Week in Spaceflight with NASASpaceflight.com. \n \nHost:\n\n\n\nJohn “Das” Galloway is a science outreach communicator who specializes in live\, interactive video content. The series will feature book talks\, film screenings\, and panel discussions highlighting historical impacts and their connections to current events and contemporary experiences. \nThis month\, the Intrepid Museum and the Metropolitan Opera have teamed up for a behind-the-scenes program featuring its newest opera\, Grounded. A special performance begins the evening\, followed by a panel discussion featuring decorated female officers and artists reflecting on how work affects their domestic life\, the roles of service to one’s country and one’s home\, and the challenges of volleying identities between service and domestic life. \nDoors open at 6:30pm\, program begins at 7:00pm.(Guests must arrive no later than 7:00pm). \nLight refreshments will be served. \nPre-registration is required for this free program. \nAll event attendees receive a special offer to attend Grounded at the Met\, running from Sep 23 – Oct 19\, 2024. \n\n\nPanelists:\n\n\n\nLieutenant Colonel Tammy Barlette is the founder of Athena’s Voice\, a speaking collective featuring female pilots from around the United States as well as the founder and CEO of Crosscheck Mental Performance Training. She herself is a fighter pilot who served in the Air Force for over 20 years\, retiring in September of 2018 as a Lieutenant Colonel. She has flown multiple aircraft\, to include the T-37 Tweet\, T-38 Talon\, A-10 Warthog\, MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper\, accumulating more than 3000 total flying hours and over 1500 hours of combat support time assisting and protecting troops on the ground in both Iraq and Afghanistan. She is also a graduate of the prestigious US Air Force Weapons School and has a Master of Arts in Christian Ministry. Tammy is married to a Federal Agent and has three children. \n \n\n\n\nJeanine Tesori is a composer known for both opera and musical theatre\, Tesori has 5 Tony Award nominations amongst a wide output of musicals\, notably winning the Tony Award for Best Original Score in 2015 for Fun Home. She is also the first female composer to have two original musicals running at the same time on Broadway. In the operatic world\, Tesori has been commissioned by the Glimmerglass Festival twice and shares the title of being the first female commissioned composer at the Metropolitan Opera alongside Missy Mazzoli. \n \n\n\n\nEmily D’Angelo was hailed by the New York Times as “one of the world’s special young singers\,” and has continued her meteoric rise and firmly established herself as one of the most exciting and critically acclaimed artists of her generation. Called “wondrous and powerful“ by The NY Times for her recent US recital debut\, the mezzo-soprano is the first and only vocalist to have been presented with the Leonard Bernstein Award from the Schleswig Holstein Festival. A 2020 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist\, one of Canada’s “Top 30 Under 30” Classical Musicians\, and WQXR NYC Public Radio’s “40 Under 40” singers to watch\, D’Angelo made her stage debut\, at only 21 years of age.. She now stars as Jess in The Metropolitan Opera’s production of Grounded\, opening the ‘24-’25 season on September 23. \n \n\n\nModerator:\n\n\n\nDana H. Born\, PH.D. (Brigadier General\, USAF Retired) recently transitioned as the Faculty Chair for the Senior Executive Fellows (SEF) program at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) of Government\, previously served as the Co-Director for the HKS’s Center for Public Leadership and Faculty Advisor for the Black Family Graduate Fellowship for Veterans and the National Security Fellows program. She is a retired Brigadier General with thirty years of service in the United States Air Force having served as a military commander in times of peace\, conflict\, and crises. Prior to Harvard she served eleven years at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) as the Dean of the Faculty and Department Chair for the Behavioral Sciences and Leadership Department. Dr. Born serves on a wide variety public\, private and nonprofit Boards and is a Distinguished Fellow in Moral Leadership for the HOW Institute for Society. Her keen sense of human/institutional behavior and military background serve as the focus of her research interests in character-based leadership development\, organizational behavior/ethics\, human and social capacity\, and performance\, change and risk management\, strategic alignment\, inclusive excellence\, diversity\, decision-making and gender related issues. She enjoys skiing\, hiking\, cooking\, and traveling… especially visiting her two active-duty daughters. \n \n\n\nAbout the opera\, Grounded:\n\n\n\nEmily D’Angelo portrays Jess in Jeanine Tesori’s Grounded\, photographed by Paola Kudacki. Jess\, a hot-shot fighter pilot has an unplanned pregnancy\, taking her out of the cockpit and landing her in Las Vegas\, where she operates a Reaper drone from halfway around the world. Jess reflects the mental health challenges that follow combat experience and the morality of death rained down by remote control. \n \nTwo-time Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori’s powerful new opera Grounded\, commissioned by the Met and based on librettist George Brant’s acclaimed play\, wrestles with the ethical quandaries and psychological toll of 21st-century warfare. Mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo\, one of opera’s most compelling young stars\, portrays Jess\, a hot-shot fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas\, operating a Reaper drone halfway around the world. As she struggles to adjust to this new way of doing battle\, she fights to maintain her sanity\, and her soul\, as she is called to rain down death by remote control. Michael Mayer’s high-tech staging\, using a vast array of LED screens\, presents a variety of perspectives on the action\, including the drone’s predatory view from high above.
