SUMMARY:Recipes & Rituals for Community Care: Soundbath Meditation & Tea Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an herbal tea ceremony\, and sound-bowl meditation.\n\n\nJoin us for a moment to slow down for a reflective evening of tea\, and sound. Grounding in our herbal tea of the evening of hibiscus\, mint\, and butterfly pea\, we’ll begin the evening learning how to welcome these plants into our bodies through a tea ceremony led by Tia. Tia will share her practice with both tea and soundbaths\, sharing how these practices can contribute to collective care for ourselves and each other. We’ll close the evening with Tia leading us into a soundbath meditation. \nTake time to exchange breath with the plants in the greenhouse\, enjoy and herbal tea to calm the body\, and rest into this guided soundbath meditation.\n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Mattia “Tia” Colon is an Environmental Master Level Social Worker\, Soundbowl Mindfulness Meditation Facilitator and Community Gardener. She facilitates soundbowl mindfulness meditation events to diverse communities across NYC. She utilizes various singing bowls and other instruments to create sound frequencies to induce a relaxing and healing atmosphere. She will be hosting future meditation and tea ceremony events to create powerful meditative experiences.\n\n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to heal in community? What does it feel like when we extend care to ourselves and the collective? How do plants and our local ecologies care for us? How can we care for the plants and local ecologies in return?\n \nWeave in rituals and recipes into your own self-care and community care practices through weekly explorations in herbal arts\, somatic movement in the greenhouse and garden\, folk remedies\, and other wild-crafts and meditative activities that foster a deeper connection to plants to care for the body\, mental health\, and the people you move with. \n \nEach week\, be guided by a guest herbalist\, healing artist\, or wellness practitioner who will help you create your own toolkit and apothecary for self and communal care.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. Our learning garden has grass paths\, and the entrance is through a gate with a small\, raised entrance. Our tables can be lowered/raised\, and we have several backless benches or stools. Our kitchen is in regular use\, and while we try to cook without peanuts\, much of our cookware is shared and we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment. We have a first aid kit\, and the closest AED is in another building several yards away. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nOur closest bathrooms are a building away\, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available\, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. We are not a scent-free zone\, and because herbalism classes take place here\, cannot guarantee that the site will be clear of any essential oil smells. If you have needs not addressed here\, please reach out to Mallory Craig at mcraig@thehort.org.

SUMMARY:Art in the Garden: Botanical Illustration
DESCRIPTION:Honing in on the Art of Observation through Botanical Illustration with Colored Pencils\n\n\n“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.” – Rachel Carson \nJoin us in the garden and greenhouse to hone your observational skills and learn to work with colored pencils to merge both science and art through the dicipline of botanical illustration. In this session\, participants will explore how the drawing of a flower can elicit an emotional response while also documenting and educating for conservation purposes the form\, function\, and biodiversity in the plants portrayed. Together\, we’ll take to the garden\, finding the plant that most calls to us\, contemplating it’s beauty and settling into the art of noticing. \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Susan Kricorian\nSince I was a young girl growing up in Watertown\, MA\, drawing\, painting in response to my surroundings have always been magical acts that brought me great satisfaction.Art has been a private world where my interests in parallels that exist within the natural world and human nature\, gestural brushwork\, bright colors\, and patterns continue to be important elements in my work.I moved to NYC in 1986 and began teaching art for the DOE in 1988. In 2021 I retired from teaching full-time.Recently\, Iʼve been inspired by old family photographs taken by my father\, works by beloved artists\, construction in my neighborhood\, world events\, collective experiences during these tumultuous times. I love studying the subjectsʼ expressions\, gestures and exploring their underling temperaments\, honest evocations in relationships and bringing them to life with paint. Mystery\, curiosity and beauty remain constant forces behind my creative energy.\n\n\n\nGrounded in the garden\, join us to critically and creatively engage in a diversity of artmaking techniques that open us up to deeper dialogue on place\, our relationships to our lived environments\, ecological concerns\, and contemporary culture. Learn meditative and mindful drawing\, printmaking and sculptural techniques\, scientific observation with plant portraiture\, nature-inspired intuitive artmaking and mixed media exploration\, and other various practices from botanical and ecologically-focused contemporary artists to create works of art to nurture your relationship to the garden.\n \nImmerse yourself in the learning garden\, greenhouse\, and across Riverbank State Park’s green roof overlooking the Hudson River to create artwork that is rooted in place and in partnership with plants.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces.

SUMMARY:Art & AgriCulture: Botanical White Chocolates
DESCRIPTION:Colorful\, Spring White Chocolate Coins Filled and Embellished with Medicinal and Edible Flowers\n\n\nWhen considering garden to table meals\, have you thought about integrating edible flowers? \nIn this session\, participants will work with white chocolate and an array of medicinal plant powders such as butterfly pea\, rose\, and matcha to create white chocolate mendiants that help us sneak colorful and medicinal plants into a sweet indulgent treat. Then\, particpants will work with a variety of edible flowers to decorate and embellish their mendients\, considering how these plants bring beauty onto our plates as well as nutritional and culinary diversity! \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Vivian Arias \nVivian is a Crystal Therapist specializing in Personal & Spiritual Development. Her unique approach integrates mindset\, energetics\, and spirituality to provide a grounded wholistic approach to personal growth and empowerment.\nPhoto Courtesey of artist Vivian Arias. Find more about Vivian’s work at https://www.crystallinechrysalis.co/\n \n\n\n\n“Another thing we lost is culture. . . look at the word agriculture. We lost that connection. And so now it’s going back to the culture of agriculture. Why do we grow the food that we do?” – Karen Washington\n\n\nWhy do we grow the foods we do? How is culture tied to our local foodways and agricultural systems? What stories of nourishment are you hungry to tell? What creative acts are you being called to digest? In this weekly series\, explore various techniques and practices introduced by visiting artists who will lead us in expressing our relationship to food\, agriculture\, and the histories and stories that shape how we connect with our foodways.\nThrough various artmaking techniques like bookmaking\, printmaking\, collage\, sculpture\, natural-pigment making and painting\, alternative photography processes\, participants will create artwork that begins to answer the question: Where is the culture in our agricultural system?\n\n\nThis is a free drop-in program. Come to every class to build on your skill or come to one or two that you are available for. Explore your relationship to food and agriculture and the ways our food systems can connect us more deeply to our local ecosystems and communities.\n\n \n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. SUMMARY:Friday Storytime at the Museum
DESCRIPTION:Museum staff and other guest readers share stories\, rhymes and sing-alongs with children ages 2 to 5 years and their caregivers every Friday at 10:00 am. A $5 suggested donation is appreciated. \nLaunched in 2005 by librarian and former Museum Trustee Penny Metsch\, the program is open to all on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nDue to weather or staffing shortages\, the program may be canceled without advance notice. To confirm on the day of the event\, please call 201/656-2240\, or contact us at info@hobokenmuseum.org. \nTips and Guidelines for making Storytime successful: \n\nIf your child is crying or having a difficult time\, please take him or her outside so as not to disturb the others and try to come back another time.\nIf your child is not being gentle with another child\, please separate the children and make sure it doesn’t happen again.\nCell phones are fine for taking pictures of your child\, but not for talking on or texting.\nAll the adults are role models for the children. If they see you sitting and listening to the story\, they will too. If they see you talking or texting\, they won’t.\nPlease enjoy your food AFTER Storytime\, not during\, and take any cups or wrappers with you.\n\nThank you for your cooperation!
