DESCRIPTION:@ \n \n \n\n\nThrough Fabric & Frame is the second installment in our Women’s History Month series\, Legacy is a Living Force. Join us Saturday\, March 22nd\, between 11 am and 6 pm for a daylong study of Black feminist thought\, engaging the works of Faith Ringgold and Lorraine O’Grady.  \nThrough storytelling\, quilting\, photography\, and collective study\, we hope to learn how to incorporate their legacies into our own creative practices. \nThe Day’s Offerings Include: \n11 AM – 12 PM  \nStorytime: Tar Beach – A reading of Faith Ringgold’s beloved children’s book\, inviting reflections on dreams\, memory\, and freedom. Families are welcome\, and art-making inspired by the book will follow the reading. \n1 – 3 PM  \nQuiltmaking Workshop – Led by sisters Donnette and Kimberly Williams and inspired by Ringgold’s storytelling quilts\, we will create patterned pillowcases while exploring quilting traditions and their symbolic meanings. \n4 – 5:30 PM \nTeach-In – We will close the day with a communal reading and discussion of Lorraine O’Grady’s seminal text Olympia’s Maid\, reflecting on the ongoing relevance of the Black feminist gaze. \nONGOING  \n11 AM – 6 PM \nPhotography Activation –Photographer Laila Annmarie Stevens will lead a drop-in photo session reactivating Lorraine O’Grady’s iconic Art Is… series. To extend this communal art-making practice\, disposable cameras will be provided for guests to document their own perspectives on the Weeksville grounds. Timed sign-ups for portraits with Laila are required—reserve your slot here. \nRSVP & Sign-Up Required: Advanced registration is required for the Photography Portrait Sessions with Laila Ann Marie Stevens. RSVP HERE. \nFACILITATOR BIOS \nAbout Laila Annmarie Stevens \nLaila Annmarie Stevens (b. 2001) is a Black Queer Photographer and Visual Artist born and raised in South Jamaica Queens\, NY based in Brooklyn\, NY. She received her BFA in Photography and Related Media at The Fashion Institute of Technology. She is redefining traditional family structures through contemporary community kinship\, particularly amongst queer youth and the sisterhood of marginalized women and girls. Through her early work with local youth organizations throughout the five boroughs\, she’s incorporated image-making to envision a world of inclusion and power.  \nAbout Donnette and Kimberly Williams \nDonnette A. Williams has lived a life in service to her community through her practice of the arts\, which started at the age of four. As a holistic and inclusive occupational therapy professional\, she has been able to combine both passions to curate diasporic galleries and cultural forums for the whole person via platforms of dance\, culinary demonstrations\, book clubs\, and more. She has also served for nearly twenty years in her church’s Black History Ministry\, of which she is currently the Co-Director. \nKimberly Denise Williams believes that every community deserves the information and resources needed to make the best decisions\, and this has been a guiding mission in both her professional and vocational activities. A native Brooklynite\, she has worked to amplify her community and has been featured in national publications like Vibe and local Brooklyn outlets like Voices of Lefferts\, where she currently volunteers on the oral history project. Kimberly also serves on the advisory board of Little Caribbean. She can be found chasing whimsy\, grace\, and justice when she is not running around Prospect Park. \nThis event is two of three in our month-long dedication to the luminaries who transitioned this past year\, including Faith Ringgold\, Lorraine O’Grady\, and Judith Jamison. In the face of our present reality\, we understand that the work they have left behind continues to nourish our imaginations and shape our collective consciousness. Their transitions remind us that legacy is a living force. We hope you join us this month in communion. \n \n\nRSVP HERE\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n Add to calendar \n\n\n\n \n Google Calendar \n \n\n \n iCalendar \n \n\n \n Outlook 365 \n \n\n \n Outlook Live

SUMMARY:Gardens on the Hill & Zone IV GCA Artist Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Reeves-Reed Arboretum is excited to announce its first art exhibition of 2025\, Gardens on the Hill. This eclectic show brings together a curated selection of works from artists across the United States\, including celebrated talents from New Jersey. Each artist offers a unique lens through which the garden\, in all its diversity\, is interpreted. This exhibition mirrors the distinctive charm of Reeves-Reed Arboretum\, where each garden zone thrives with its own essence. Through varied techniques and styles\, these artists imbue their creations with the vibrancy of nature\, ultimately coming together in a collective showcase that honors the garden as both a personal sanctuary and a shared source of beauty and inspiration. \nGardens on the Hill features artists Pamela Casper\, Sheila Fox\, Valerie Leuchs\, Paige Lindsey\, Tracey Luckner\, Carolyn McKibbin\, Alyssa Watters\, Marilyn Foehrenbach Wirtz\, and Kelly Worman. Additionally\, a showcase of works by twelve artists from the Zone IV chapter of the Garden Club of America will be exhibited\, each inspired by two of the Arboretum’s iconic features: the rose garden and the daffodil bowl. Works range in media including oils\, watercolors\, ceramics\, and quilts. Artists’ interpretations of the garden vary in style from abstract to hyper-realistic. All works are for sale\, and the artists will generously donate 30% of each sale back to the Arboretum. \nThis exhibition is on display from February 11 – May 23. \nThe public is invited to an opening reception on February 22\, 2025 from 2 pm – 4 pm. Click here to register. \nGallery Hours are Tuesday through Sunday 10 am – 4 pm except when closed for private events. Click here to confirm gallery hours. \nThis exhibition corresponds with the Garden Club of America Zone IV Flower Show\, hosted by the Summit Garden Club\, on Wednesday\, May 21\, 2025. \nQuestions about this exhibition can be directed to Arboretum Office Manager Marilyn Foehrenbach at m.foehrenbach@reeves-reedarboretum.org.

SUMMARY:Nothing is Impossible @ Octagon House Tour
DESCRIPTION:This special one-hour guided tour tells the story of the last five decades of The Armour-Stiner Octagon House\, during which it has been restored from near-ruin to its 1870s glory. Owner and preservation architect Joseph Lombardi once said that restoring The Octagon House was “like assembling a 500\,000-piece jigsaw puzzle” – a task so overwhelming that many considered it impossible! While exploring the veranda and three primary floors\, visitors will learn about the unbelievably detailed process of determining original interior and exterior paint colors\, the magical moments of uncovering new puzzle pieces of the house’s history\, and how the dome was saved from near collapse.
