SUMMARY:Recipes & Rituals for Community Care: Rooted and Grounded Steps Forward
DESCRIPTION:Self-exploration and community connection through expressive artmaking and grounding in the garden.\n\n\nIn this reflective and restorative open craft session\, get crafty with us by working with chancletas\, or flip flops\, and various charms and yarns to create your own footware to serve you in a gentle stroll in the garden. As we gather around the craft table surrounded by plants in the garden\, we’ll talk about what it is we need to stay rooted and grounded through our own embodied artmaking. When our creations are complete\, we’ll take them on a stroll in the garden\, taking a walking meditation to engage the land as witness and teacher.\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Luz is a Harlem native of Dominican decent. She is an active greenhouse community member\, lover of crochet\, and all things nature.\n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to heal in community? What does it feel like when we extend care to ourselves and the collective? How do plants and our local ecologies care for us? How can we care for the plants and local ecologies in return?\n \nWeave in rituals and recipes into your own self-care and community care practices through weekly explorations in herbal arts\, somatic movement in the greenhouse and garden\, folk remedies\, and other wild-crafts and meditative activities that foster a deeper connection to plants to care for the body\, mental health\, and the people you move with. \n \nEach week\, be guided by a guest herbalist\, healing artist\, or wellness practitioner who will help you create your own toolkit and apothecary for self and communal care.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. Our learning garden has grass paths\, and the entrance is through a gate with a small\, raised entrance. Our tables can be lowered/raised\, and we have several backless benches or stools. Our kitchen is in regular use\, and while we try to cook without peanuts\, much of our cookware is shared and we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment. We have a first aid kit\, and the closest AED is in another building several yards away. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nOur closest bathrooms are a building away\, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available\, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. We are not a scent-free zone\, and because herbalism classes take place here\, cannot guarantee that the site will be clear of any essential oil smells. SUMMARY:Art in the Garden: In Phases of Growth | A Cyanotype Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Create Your own Botanical Prints Using the Alchemy of Cyanotype\n\n\nCyanotype is a cameraless photography practice widley populated in the 1840s by botanist Anna Atkins to document botanical specimens. Since\, it has become an archival process in art and science circles alike. Join us to learn the cyantype process yourself and contribute to an artistic archive of the plants in our learning garden.  \nTogether\, we’ll learna brief history and the alchemy of the cyanotype process\, then move to the garden where we’ll select the botanicals we most wish to work with\, composing our own prints and working witht the light of the sun to document what is alive and blooming in our garden. \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Nadia Bongo\nNadia Bongo is a teaching artist and translator. A former Brooklyn Poets Fellow\, her writing and/or photographs have appeared in African Voices\, Litro online\, Solstice\, The Citron Review\, Blue Mesa Review\, and elsewhere. Her first co-directed poetry short film\, supported by a BPL program\, has been selected by festivals. Learn meditative and mindful drawing\, printmaking and sculptural techniques\, scientific observation with plant portraiture\, nature-inspired intuitive artmaking and mixed media exploration\, and other various practices from botanical and ecologically-focused contemporary artists to create works of art to nurture your relationship to the garden.\n \nImmerse yourself in the learning garden\, greenhouse\, and across Riverbank State Park’s green roof overlooking the Hudson River to create artwork that is rooted in place and in partnership with plants.\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. Our learning garden has grass paths\, and the entrance is through a gate with a small\, raised entrance. Our tables can be lowered/raised\, and we have several backless benches or stools. Our kitchen is in regular use\, and while we try to cook without peanuts\, much of our cookware is shared and we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment. We have a first aid kit\, and the closest AED is in another building several yards away. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers. \nOur closest bathrooms are a building away\, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available\, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. We are not a scent-free zone\, and because herbalism classes take place here\, cannot guarantee that the site will be clear of any essential oil smells. SUMMARY:Art & AgriCulture: Connecting the Americas: A Storytelling Session on Maize
DESCRIPTION:Share your own personal corn connection as we share stories and meaning behind this important foodway.\n\n\nInviting all maize / corn lovers!\nJoin us around the table and in the garden to spend time thinking about the cultural\, spiritual and political significance of maize throughout the Americas. Together\, look to the history and gather stories of when we first met this plant\, recalling memories of tending in the garden or over a delicious meal. Together\, we’ll tell our stories to undersand more deeply our relationship to the important foodway. We’ll end our storytelling session by making our own corn silk tea and sharing corn bread together\, visiting the corn kin in our shared learning garden.\n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Jasmín Durán \nNestled in the intersections of decolonization\, immigration\, youth work\, healing justice\, land and herbalism\, Jasmín’s work seeks to uplift\, celebrate and preserve the legacy of ancestral healing\, wisdom\, and technologies in the diaspora. As a child of immigrants\, Jasmín embodies a deep understanding of the challenges and joys of the migrant experience in the US. \nJasmín has a B.A. in International Relations & Food Studies from Syracuse University (2015). In 2020\, she completed a Spiritual Herbalism Apprenticeship under the guidance of Master Herbalist Karen Rose at Sacred Vibes Apothecary in Brooklyn\, NY. She has worked extensively at local community gardens and in organic farm projects abroad. As an educator\, her work is participatory\, culturally aware\, youth centered and trauma informed. Today\, she continues to support youth in NYC\, working in an anti-violence organization where she co-creates brave spaces with young people to unpack\, question\, dream and decolonize. \n\n\n\n“Another thing we lost is culture. . . look at the word agriculture. We lost that connection. And so now it’s going back to the culture of agriculture. Why do we grow the food that we do?” – Karen Washington\nWhy do we grow the foods we do? How is culture tied to our local foodways and agricultural systems? What stories of nourishment are you hungry to tell? What creative acts are you being called to digest? In this weekly series\, explore various techniques and practices introduced by visiting artists who will lead us in expressing our relationship to food\, agriculture\, and the histories and stories that shape how we connect with our foodways.\nThrough various artmaking techniques like bookmaking\, printmaking\, collage\, sculpture\, natural-pigment making and painting\, alternative photography processes\, participants will create artwork that begins to answer the question: Where is the culture in our agricultural system?\nThis is a free drop-in program. Come to every class to build on your skill or come to one or two that you are available for. Explore your relationship to food and agriculture and the ways our food systems can connect us more deeply to our local ecosystems and communities.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. Our learning garden has grass paths\, and the entrance is through a gate with a small\, raised entrance. Our tables can be lowered/raised\, and we have several backless benches or stools. Our kitchen is in regular use\, and while we try to cook without peanuts\, much of our cookware is shared and we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment. We have a first aid kit\, and the closest AED is in another building several yards away. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nOur closest bathrooms are a building away\, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available\, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. We are not a scent-free zone\, and because herbalism classes take place here\, cannot guarantee that the site will be clear of any essential oil smells.
