Through this practice\, we aim to deepen our connection to our mind\, our body\, and the life around us in nature. \nAt the end of our walk\, we’ll sample a tea made from pine and spruce needles foraged on the Weis property\, with some seasonal variations throughout the year. DESCRIPTION:Hands-on History is a free activity series every first and third Saturday of every month. Open to the public!\n\n\nOn May 11th\, 1896\, William Heise\, an assistant for Thomas Edison\, was testing a new camera and filmed “Herald Square” in New York City. There was no plot\, no story\, no characters\, and just a few minutes long. This was the first film shot in NYC and only the beginning for cinema. Movie-lovers rejoice!  \nStop by the museum to make your own thaumatrope! The thaumatrope\, invented in 1826 by the English physician J.A. Paris\, is an optical toy that creates a moving image when the instrument is twirled. By drawing an image on the front and back of a piece of paper\, you can make a “moving image” when twisted. This was a popular 19th century toy and an early introduction to film. \nAll ages welcome!

Born in 1943 to a Mexican immigrant family\, Mesa-Bains is a leading figure in Chicanx art for nearly half a century\, producing work that explores intersectional feminist themes\, environmentally centered spirituality\, and cultural diversity. \nThroughout the day\, explore the exhibition with free gallery tours\, then meet us in the Cafe on 104th Street for art activities\, storytelling and dance workshops\, and more. \nThe block party will be followed by a concert presented in collaboration with Carnegie Hall City Wide Concert Series at 4pm in El Museo’s Teatro\, featuring Caña Dulce & Caña Brava. As beneficiaries of jarocho culture and noteworthy performers with years of experience on both national and international stages\, Caña Dulce y Caña Brava’s performances celebrate the music\, poetry\, dance and traditional attire of Veracruz\, Mexico.
