SUMMARY:The Peking Acrobats
DESCRIPTION:THE PEKING ACROBATS have redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics. They perform daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs and display their technical prowess at such arts as trick-cycling\, precision tumbling\, juggling\, somersaulting\, and gymnastics. They push the limits of human ability\, defying gravity with amazing displays of contortion\, flexibility\, and control. All Ages.  \nSince their founding in 1986\, THE PEKING ACROBATS have been featured on numerous television shows and celebrity-studded TV specials. These include Nickelodeon’s Unfabulous\, The Wayne Brady Show\, That’s Incredible\, ABC’s Wide World of Sports\, and NBC’s Ring In The New Year Holiday Special. \n \nTHE PEKING ACROBATS set the world record for the Human Chair Stack on FOX Network’s Guinness Book Primetime television show in 1999: they balanced six people precariously atop six chairs twenty one feet up in the air without safety lines\, astounding audiences with their bravery and dexterity. \n\n\n\nTHE PEKING ACROBATS are part of a time-honored Chinese tradition\, rooted in centuries of Chinese history and folk art. Tradition demands that each generation of acrobats add its own improvements and embellishments; because of this\, high honor is conferred upon those skilled enough to become acrobats. THE PEKING ACROBATS seek to uphold this rich and ancient folk art tradition\, bringing it to new technical heights while integrating twenty-first century technology. In the words of Clive Davis of the New York Post\, “THE PEKING ACROBATS [are] pushing the envelope of human possibility\,” combining agility and grace in remarkable feats of “pure artistry.”

SUMMARY:Guardians of the Gateway: The Forts of New York Harbor
DESCRIPTION:Discover the fortresses that have defended New York Harbor!\n\n\nNew York Harbor is a classic example of how forts defended both the upper and lower harbors from the establishment of Fort Amsterdam by the Dutch in 1623 through the modern missile era of the mid-1900’s. Join us for a slide presentation from the Park Historian and discover how the different fort designs and their weapons evolved over the past 300 years\, and that many of them still exist preserved by the National Park Service waiting to be explored.

SUMMARY:Hands-on History: Counting Sheep
DESCRIPTION:Hands-on History is a free activity series every first and third Saturday of every month. Open to the public!\n\n\nIn Rufus King’s time\, sheep were mainly used for their wool and not yet for their meat. King had 26 sheep on the property\, and we have original wool carders\, a loom\, and a spinning wheel that were all used to make clothing and blankets. For this HOH craft\, we are putting the wool back ON the sheep! \nJoin us in using recycled packing peanuts to create your own cheery sheep puppet. It may come in handy when you are having trouble sleeping at night\, especially due to Daylight Savings (March 10th)! \nHands-on History is a FREE family program series held each first and third Saturday of the month at King Manor from 1-4pm.
