SUMMARY:Super Sabado: Recuerdos Familiares
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate a day honoring the memories of our ancestors\, family traditions\, and the power of women storytellers\, inspired by the new exhibition\, Amalia Mesa-Bains: Archeology of Memory\, a retrospective by the pioneering artist\, curator\, and theorist. Born in 1943 to a Mexican immigrant family\, Mesa-Bains is a leading figure in Chicanx art for nearly half a century\, producing work that explores intersectional feminist themes\, environmentally centered spirituality\, and cultural diversity. \nThroughout the day\, explore the exhibition with free gallery tours\, then meet us in the Cafe on 104th Street for art activities\, storytelling and dance workshops\, and more. \nThe block party will be followed by a concert presented in collaboration with Carnegie Hall City Wide Concert Series at 4pm in El Museo’s Teatro\, featuring Caña Dulce & Caña Brava. As beneficiaries of jarocho culture and noteworthy performers with years of experience on both national and international stages\, Caña Dulce y Caña Brava’s performances celebrate the music\, poetry\, dance and traditional attire of Veracruz\, Mexico. The group stands out as an artistic project that highlights feminine poetry and voices\, accompanied by traditional string instruments such as the harp and the jarana\, percussion and zapateado. \nAll ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is advised; all activities are first come\, first served. \nFree Admission. | To RSVP\, click here.

SUMMARY:Hands-on History: Moving Images
DESCRIPTION:Hands-on History is a free activity series every first and third Saturday of every month. Open to the public!\n\n\nOn May 11th\, 1896\, William Heise\, an assistant for Thomas Edison\, was testing a new camera and filmed “Herald Square” in New York City. There was no plot\, no story\, no characters\, and just a few minutes long. This was the first film shot in NYC and only the beginning for cinema. Movie-lovers rejoice! \nStop by the museum to make your own thaumatrope! The thaumatrope\, invented in 1826 by the English physician J.A. Paris\, is an optical toy that creates a moving image when the instrument is twirled. By drawing an image on the front and back of a piece of paper\, you can make a “moving image” when twisted. This was a popular 19th century toy and an early introduction to film. \nAll ages welcome!

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing Sensory Walk
DESCRIPTION:‘Bathe’ in the forest atmosphere using your senses\, mindfulness and short guided meditations\n\n\nThe practice of forest bathing means to immerse oneself in the forest and soak in the atmosphere through the senses. Today’s walk at an easy pace will focus on connecting to nature through mindfulness\, as we explore our senses and the present moment through short\, guided\, meditations and breathing exercises in the forest. Through this practice\, we aim to deepen our connection to our mind\, our body\, and the life around us in nature. \nAt the end of our walk\, we’ll sample a tea made from pine and spruce needles foraged on the Weis property\, with some seasonal variations throughout the year. This tea is meant to show our gratitude and appreciation and is a way of tasting and taking in the land to further connect to it. \nForest bathing has been shown to help decrease stress levels and anxiety\, and helps improve the immune system and symptoms of depression\, to name a few benefits. \nCome explore a new way of walking through the forest! \n\nLed by Lead Educator Lauren Lynch.\nOpen to ages 13 and up. \nNon-refundable; In case of rain\, you will be notified and the program will be rescheduled.\nOutdoor program; please dress accordingly.\nNo dogs please.\nParking is available in the outer lot on Snake Den Rd\, or you may drive in through the gate and park near the main brick building.
