SUMMARY:Art in the Garden: Sunshine in a Bottle
DESCRIPTION:Harness the light! Cast rainbows! And find flow working with dried botanicals and upcycled materials\n\n\nWith the arrival of Autumn Equninox\, as the days get shorter\, perserve Summer blooms that brightened your day in your own upcycled botanical lantern. Work with pressed flowers from the garden and upcycled jars to disrupt the wastestream\, create something anew\, and find flow. \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Wilhelmina Grant-Cooper\nWilhelmina Grant-Cooper is a Harlem-based visual artist\, arts instructor\, and author. She transforms found objects into visual art and sparks viewers’ creativity through discussion and hands-on activities. She is an arts instructor in healthcare settings wherein she uses the arts to nurture the creativity of cancer patients\, their families\, and staff. She also guides elder participants through arts projects at senior centers throughout the city.\nFind more of her work at @sistaahstudio on Instagram or on sistaah.org\n\n\n\nJoin us for Art in the Garden every Thursday!\n \nGrounded in the garden\, join us to critically and creatively engage in a diversity of artmaking techniques that open us up to deeper dialogue on place\, our relationships to our lived environments\, ecological concerns\, and contemporary culture. Learn meditative and mindful drawing\, printmaking and sculptural techniques\, scientific observation with plant portraiture\, nature-inspired intuitive artmaking and mixed media exploration\, and other various practices from botanical and ecologically-focused contemporary artists to create works of art to nurture your relationship to the garden. \nImmerse yourself in the learning garden\, greenhouse\, and across Riverbank State Park’s green roof overlooking the Hudson River to create artwork that is rooted in place and in partnership with plants. \n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. Our learning garden has grass paths\, and the entrance is through a gate with a small\, raised entrance. Our tables can be lowered/raised\, and we have several backless benches or stools. Our kitchen is in regular use\, and while we try to cook without peanuts\, much of our cookware is shared and we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment. We have a first aid kit\, and the closest AED is in another building several yards away. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers. \nOur closest bathrooms are a building away\, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available\, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. We are not a scent-free zone\, and because herbalism classes take place here\, cannot guarantee that the site will be clear of any essential oil smells. If you have needs not addressed here\, please reach out to Mallory Craig at mcraig@thehort.org.

SUMMARY:Féminin Pluriel\, a solo exhibition by artist Pascale Bouchard
DESCRIPTION:Reeves-Reed Arboretum is pleased to present Féminin Pluriel\, a solo exhibition by Québec-based artist Pascale Bouchard. This exhibition highlights Bouchard’s distinctive encaustic practice\, in which pigmented beeswax and heat are used to create richly textured works of art. Rooted in themes of transformation\, memory\, and the symbolic power of the feminine\, her work draws deeply from floral imagery and organic forms\, evoking both the fragility and resilience of the natural world. \nA curated selection of artist-designed objects and garments inspired by the Féminin Pluriel series will be available for purchase\, and a live demonstration of Bouchard’s encaustic technique will be scheduled this fall at the Arboretum. \nThe exhibition will be on view from June 2 through October 31 in the Wisner House. \nGallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday\, 10 am – 4 pm unless closed for a private event. Please check here for updated hours.  \nAll works in this exhibition will be for sale\, and the artist will donate 30% of all sales to the Arboretum.

SUMMARY:Friday Storytime at the Museum
DESCRIPTION:Museum staff and other guest readers share stories\, rhymes and sing-alongs with children ages 2 to 5 years and their caregivers every Friday at 10:00 am. A $5 suggested donation is appreciated. \nLaunched in 2005 by librarian and former Museum Trustee Penny Metsch\, the program is open to all on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nDue to weather or staffing shortages\, the program may be canceled without advance notice. To confirm on the day of the event\, please call 201/656-2240\, or contact us at info@hobokenmuseum.org. \nTips and Guidelines for making Storytime successful: \n\nIf your child is crying or having a difficult time\, please take him or her outside so as not to disturb the others and try to come back another time.\nIf your child is not being gentle with another child\, please separate the children and make sure it doesn’t happen again.\nCell phones are fine for taking pictures of your child\, but not for talking on or texting.\nAll the adults are role models for the children. If they see you sitting and listening to the story\, they will too. If they see you talking or texting\, they won’t.\nPlease enjoy your food AFTER Storytime\, not during\, and take any cups or wrappers with you.\n\nThank you for your cooperation!

SUMMARY:CSA Supper Club: Eating Seasonally: Local Ecosystems & Seasonal Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:Explore the origins stories of CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture)as we unpack and taste test the foods inside.\n\n\nWhat does it truly mean to eat seasonally? Seasonal eating is more than purchasing what’s available at the farmers market it’s about learning to read the landscape\, understand your local ecosystem\, and recognize how nature supports our nutritional needs throughout the year. \nJoin us around the garden table to explore how seasonal foods reflect the changing needs of both the environment and our bodies. Together\, we will examine what grows during each season\, how local ecosystems shape the foods available to us\, and how observing these natural cycles can help us make more intentional food choices. Participants will also learn how to identify nutritional strengths and limitations within their regional food system\, encouraging a flexible approach that combines local foods with informed decisions about what may need to be supplemented or sourced elsewhere. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will gain practical tools for observing seasonal change\, understanding their local food landscape\, and developing a deeper relationship with the place they call home. \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: \nJournei Bimwala is a clinical herbalist\, foraging practitioner\, nutrition health coach\, and educator dedicated to helping people build meaningful relationships with the natural world through food and plants. Drawing from her experience in foraging\, herbal medicine\, and community education\, she teaches participants how to reconnect with the landscapes they inhabit by making what is unknown known and what is known accessible. Her work weaves together traditional ecological knowledge\, modern nutritional understanding\, and cultural wisdom to inspire people to see food not only as nourishment\, but as a pathway to health\, connection\, and stewardship.\n\n\n\nCooking\, sharing\, and storytelling through the harvest of the season. \nHistory\, place\, and imagination are all deeply rooted in what and how we grow and eat. \nEach Friday evening\, this supper club gathers around ingredients of the week–produce grown in the garden and food from our local CSA. A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is rooted in the idea that community members share in the risks and rewards of farming. By committing to a season’s harvest\, we support farmers through the lands’ and our current food system’s uncertainties and in return\, receive food that is grown in integrity and largely outside of the current extractive and exploitive\, harmful food systems. \nTogether\, we’ll gather to deepen our relationships with the sources of our food and our empathy for the people’s whose hands that food has passed through. \nThrough collaborative cooking\, recipe-sharing\, and conversations around the table\, we explore the cultural\, ecological\, and personal dimensions of food. Drawing inspiration from our kitchen’s stories\, cookbooks\, and the week’s harvest\, we’ll discover how the simple act of preparing and sharing a meal can connect us more deeply to land-workers\, food-workers\, and to the land theirself. \nThis is a free drop-in program. Come to every class or come to one or two that you are available for.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces.
