Volunteer indoors or outdoors alongside our horticulturists to support the care and upkeep of our landscape. Tasks vary by session and may include weeding\, mulching\, watering\, and more. \nGround Force Sessions: \n\n\nThursdays \n\n\n10:00 AM – 12:00 PM \n\n\n\n\nSaturdays \n\n10:00 AM – 12:00 PM\n\n\n\nWhat to Bring & Wear: \n\n\nLong pants\, long socks\, and sturdy closed-toe shoes \n\n\nInsect repellent\, sunscreen\, and a refillable water bottle \n\n\nRain gear if light rain is expected—we work in drizzle! \n\n\nRegistration is required to receive updates in case of cancellations or schedule changes. Please register at least 24 hours before each session. \nWe will supply gloves as well as all other tools and materials. For your safety\, all tools and gloves are washed and sanitized. Please meet at the barn in our parking lot. If the session is cancelled due to inclement weather or any other reason\, we will contact you. First-time volunteers must bring a completed Volunteer Waiver form to their first volunteer session. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here.

The Costa Rican rainforest is home to 9\,000 different types of flowering plants as well as loads of amazing wildlife\, including sloths\, big cats\, monkeys\, and more. The Costa Rican scarlet macaw is a colorful\, supersize parrot that can grow to nearly three feet long (!). This beautiful bird was nearly extinct a generation ago\, but a conservation effort has brought it back. Let’s celebrate! \nIn this kit\, you will receive all the frosting\, candies\, pretzels\, instructions\, and decorations needed to make one edible art project of a scarlet macaw. \nCrafts can be picked up on THURSDAY\, September 17th from 2 PM to 6 PM. Orders for younger children will be cancelled. \nEach order will receive ONE fall wreath craft kit\, which includes all the materials (patterned leaves and circular base) to make an 8″ wreath. Your doorway will look amazing! \nCrafts can be picked up on THURSDAY\, September 17th from 2 PM to 6 PM. Curbside is available. \nNeed to pick up later? We will hold your crafts from Thursday evening until Friday at 5 pm (no later) AS LONG AS YOU CONTACT US IN ADVANCE.\nReminder: All patrons are required to comply with the library’s policy against bullying\, harassment and lewd behavior. And find flow working with dried botanicals and upcycled materials\n\n\nWith the arrival of Autumn Equninox\, as the days get shorter\, perserve Summer blooms that brightened your day in your own upcycled botanical lantern. Work with pressed flowers from the garden and upcycled jars to disrupt the wastestream\, create something anew\, and find flow.  \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Wilhelmina Grant-Cooper\nWilhelmina Grant-Cooper is a Harlem-based visual artist\, arts instructor\, and author. She transforms found objects into visual art and sparks viewers’ creativity through discussion and hands-on activities. She is an arts instructor in healthcare settings wherein she uses the arts to nurture the creativity of cancer patients\, their families\, and staff. Learn meditative and mindful drawing\, printmaking and sculptural techniques\, scientific observation with plant portraiture\, nature-inspired intuitive artmaking and mixed media exploration\, and other various practices from botanical and ecologically-focused contemporary artists to create works of art to nurture your relationship to the garden. \nImmerse yourself in the learning garden\, greenhouse\, and across Riverbank State Park’s green roof overlooking the Hudson River to create artwork that is rooted in place and in partnership with plants. \n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. Our learning garden has grass paths\, and the entrance is through a gate with a small\, raised entrance. Our tables can be lowered/raised\, and we have several backless benches or stools. Our kitchen is in regular use\, and while we try to cook without peanuts\, much of our cookware is shared and we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment. We have a first aid kit\, and the closest AED is in another building several yards away. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers. \nOur closest bathrooms are a building away\, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available\, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. We are not a scent-free zone\, and because herbalism classes take place here\, cannot guarantee that the site will be clear of any essential oil smells. SUMMARY:Art in the Garden: Woven Bookmarks
DESCRIPTION:Explore weaving as a slow and attention-sustaining practice in the garden.\n\n\nJoin teaching artist Jessica Lagunas\, who will guide you in a fiber arts project to weave your very own bookmark.Bring the inspiration of the colors of your favorite Spring  flower to choose from a variety of threads and experiment with colors\, textures\, and patterns. After warping the small loom\, we’ll learn to use needles to create basic tabby stitches\, and will finish each bookmark with decorative fringes.\nNo prior weaving experience necessary.\n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Jessica Lagunas \nJessica Lagunas is a New York City-based Latinx artist.
