SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: Chromatic Terrain by Greg Navratil
DESCRIPTION:Reeves-Reed Arboretum is pleased to present Chromatic Terrain: Contemporary Landscapes by Greg Navratil\, an immersive exhibition showcasing works by Oregon-based painter Greg Navratil. Known for his rich and vibrant acrylic paintings that balance abstraction with perceptual realism\, Navratil’s art captures the essence of the natural world with expressive paint strokes that transcend direct representation.  \nBased in a renovated historic schoolhouse studio near Seaside\, Oregon\, set amid woods and gardens that the artist likens to his own “Giverny”\, Navratil pushes the potential of color and form. His process always begins in nature: he ventures into lush landscapes\, photographing scenes that later become the basis of his paintings. Up close\, brushstrokes may seem spontaneous\, but from a distance the eye assembles familiar forms of trees\, leaves\, and flowers. The result is a series of dynamic and vivid compositions that balance abstraction and realism.  \nChromatic Terrain features a captivating group of Navratil’s works that explore color and pattern in nature\, reflecting the Arboretum’s evolving garden palette as the grounds transition from winter dormancy into spring. \nThe exhibition will be on view through May 10\, 2026. A reception will be held on February 8th from 11 am – 12:30 pm\, with Curator Frank Juliano representing the artist to talk about his works. This event is free and open to the public. Register here to attend the reception.  \nGallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday\, 10 am – 4 pm unless closed for a private event. Please check here for updated hours.  \nAll works are for sale\, and the artist generously agrees to donate 30% of each sale to the Arboretum.   \nNotice: Due to ongoing construction for the Path for All project\, Arboretum parking will be unavailable Monday through Friday\, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please use street parking during these hours. Handicap parking will remain available. \n

SUMMARY:Black Queer Legacies from Harlem to Weeksville
DESCRIPTION:@ \n \n \n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, February 28th for a two-part public program exploring the vibrant intersections of Black queer history\, public art\, migration\, and community memory. Inspired by The Gay Harlem Renaissance exhibition (currently on view at The New York Historical) and the restored Exodus and Dance frieze by artist Richmond Barthé in Weeksville\, we’ll trace the creative and cultural lineages that connect Harlem’s early 20th-century queer artists to the living histories of present-day Brooklyn. \nPart One: Performance at Kingsborough HousesThe program begins at the Kingsborough Houses with a site-responsive performance inspired by Richmond Barthé’s frieze\, Exodus and Dance. The performance activates the frieze as a space of memory and embodiment\, reflecting on Barthé’s legacy as a Black queer artist and the role of public art in holding and transmitting cultural history. \nPart Two: Salon-Style Panels at Weeksville Heritage CenterAfter the performance we will transition to Weeksville Heritage Center for a series of salon-style panel conversations that bring together historians\, artists\, curators\, writers\, archivists\, and community leaders. \n\nLiving for the City: Black Migration from the Outset of the Harlem Renaissance explores Black migratory patterns between Harlem and Brooklyn during the early twentieth century. Panelists examine how housing\, employment\, transit\, and cultural life fueled movement to neighborhoods such as Bed-Stuy\, Crown Heights\, and Weeksville\, framing migration as a dynamic expression of modern Black life in New York City.\nWe Are the Record: Oral Histories and the Black Storytelling Tradition\, centers oral history as both a scholarly practice and a deeply rooted community tradition. The conversation explores oral history as a tool for preservation\, public memory\, and community building\, offering insight into how individuals and communities can document and sustain their own histories.\nBlack Contemporary Artists\, Creatives & Community-Builders brings together Black contemporary artists and cultural workers reflecting on art in public space\, creative practice as community care\, and the ongoing contributions of Black and LGBTQ+ creatives. Grounded in the legacies of the Harlem Renaissance\, Kingsborough Houses\, and Weeksville\, the panel highlights how today’s artists carry history forward while imagining new collective futures. \n\nDuring the 15-minute transitions between each panel\, guests are invited to engage with: \n\nFacilitated artmaking sessions\nHomework: Architectures of Belonging\, on view at Weeksville Heritage Center\nOral history listening stations featuring community voices and narratives\n\nSchedule Overview12:00 PM – Performance & Opening Remarks at Kingsborough Houses12:30 PM – Transition to Weeksville Heritage Center1:00 PM – Living for the City: Black Migration from the Outset of the Harlem Renaissance2:00 PM – We Are the Record: Oral Histories and the Black Storytelling Tradition3:00 PM – Black Contemporary Artists\, Creatives & Community-Builders3:45 PM – Closing Remarks4:00 PM – Program Concludes \n\nLEARN MORE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Add to calendar \n\n\n\n \n Google Calendar \n \n\n \n iCalendar \n \n\n \n Outlook 365 \n \n\n \n Outlook Live
