SUMMARY:Art in the Garden: Garden-Gathered Light - Gratitude Candle Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Use herbs\, seeds\, and dried garden treasures to make a gratitude-filled table piece.\n\n\nWhat has rooted in you this year? What are you still calling in?\nAs the growing season settles into quiet\, we’ll gather in the greenhouse to honor all the plants that bloomed\, seeded\, and those that continue to offer their textures\, colors\, and stories\, even after a season of growth. \nIn this hands-on workshop\, you’ll create a natural and upcycled table centerpiece by creating your own gratitude candle vessel using dried and suspended botanicals sourced from the garden\, as well as your own intentions\, as a small tabletop archive of this year’s growth. \nTogether\, we’ll explore how plants can anchor our gratitude rituals: how a sprig of rosemary can hold memory\, how marigold petals can evoke protection\, how seeds can symbolize future possibility.\nBy the end\, you’ll have a finished centerpiece and gratitude candle vessel to bring home—an altar of sorts for your table\, filled with the quiet beauty of botanical materials and the warmth of your intention.\n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Junell Banks\nJunell Banks is a creative visionary from Harlem\, who blends her passions for creative direction\, youth empowerment\, and self-love advocacy. Through her multifaceted initiatives\, she embodies a commitment to inspiring those around her to embrace their authentic selves with creativity and confidence. \n\n\n\nGrounded in the garden\, join us to critically and creatively engage in a diversity of artmaking techniques that open us up to deeper dialogue on place\, our relationships to our lived environments\, ecological concerns\, and contemporary culture. Learn meditative and mindful drawing\, printmaking and sculptural techniques\, scientific observation with plant portraiture\, nature-inspired intuitive artmaking and mixed media exploration\, and other various practices from botanical and ecologically-focused contemporary artists to create works of art to nurture your relationship to the garden.\n \nImmerse yourself in the learning garden\, greenhouse\, and across Riverbank State Park’s green roof overlooking the Hudson River to create artwork that is rooted in place and in partnership with plants.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. Our learning garden has grass paths\, and the entrance is through a gate with a small\, raised entrance. Our tables can be lowered/raised\, and we have several backless benches or stools. Our kitchen is in regular use\, and while we try to cook without peanuts\, much of our cookware is shared and we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment. We have a first aid kit\, and the closest AED is in another building several yards away. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers. \nOur closest bathrooms are a building away\, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available\, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. We are not a scent-free zone\, and because herbalism classes take place here\, cannot guarantee that the site will be clear of any essential oil smells. If you have needs not addressed here\, please reach out to Mallory Craig at mcraig@thehort.org.

SUMMARY:Intrepid Museum's Astro Live
DESCRIPTION:Embark on a journey to Titan with NASA’s Dragonfly\, a nuclear-powered octocopter set to explore Saturn’s largest moon in search of life!\n\n\nJoin us live on Facebook\, YouTube\, or X.\nThe Intrepid Museum will present a Virtual Astro Live program on December 14 at 3pm ET.\n \nEmbark on an extraordinary journey to Titan\, Saturn’s largest moon! With thick hazy skies\, liquid methane seas\, and a frozen surface hiding a possible subsurface ocean\, Titan offers tantalizing clues about the chemistry that may have sparked life on our own planet. \nNASA’s Dragonfly mission will be the first rotorcraft ever sent to explore another world\, bringing science fiction to life. About the size of a small car\, this nuclear-powered octocopter will take advantage of Titan’s dense atmosphere to fly across its varied landscapes — from ancient impact craters to organic-rich dunes — all while carrying a sophisticated suite of scientific instruments. Dragonfly will land\, sample\, and discover as it searches for the building blocks of life and pieces together Titan’s complex history. \nHear from experts at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory\, the team leading this ambitious mission\, as we explore how Dragonfly will reveal the secrets of this alien moon and expand our search for life beyond Earth. \n \nThe event is hosted and co-produced by John “Das” Galloway\, founder of the Kerbal Space Academy. \n\n\nParticipants:\n\n\n\nDr. Elizabeth (Zibi) Turtle is a planetary scientist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. She is the Principal Investigator for the Dragonfly New Frontiers mission to Titan and Principal Investigator for the Europa Imaging System (EIS) cameras on the Europa Clipper mission. She also participated in the Galileo\, Cassini\, and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter missions. Dr. Turtle’s research has focused on combining remote-sensing observations with numerical geophysical models to study geological structures and their implications for planetary surfaces\, interiors\, and evolution\, including tectonics and impact cratering on terrestrial planets and outer planet satellites\, the thickness of Europa’s ice shell\, the formation of Io’s mountains\, and the nature of Titan’s landscape and weather. She earned her PhD in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona\, Tucson\, and her BS in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2021\, she was awarded the Claudia J. Alexander Prize by the American Astronomical Society Division for Planetary Sciences. \n \n\n\nModerator:\n\n\n\nElysia Segal is the Producer of Public Programs at the Intrepid Museum\, where she brings science and history to life through creative and educational programming. A NASA Solar System Ambassador and the namesake of main-belt asteroid 17795 Elysiasegal\, she co-produces Astro Live for the Museum\, and is the host of This Week in Spaceflight for NASASpaceflight.com and the Popular Science Channel. She was the project director of the Museum’s Crossing the Line research & performance residency\, and has created and performed engaging\, theatrical experiences for audiences across the country. \n \nHost:\n\n\n\nJohn “Das” Galloway is a science outreach communicator who specializes in live\, interactive video content. He is the creator of the Kerbal Space Academy\, where he uses video games as a tool to start science and engineering conversations with viewers of all ages\, and VECTORS Virtual Field Trips\, which brings real-time interactive video to museums\, events\, and historical locations. “Das” also serves as a host and producer for NASASpaceflight.com. \n \n\n\n\nAstro Live is supported through a NASA Cooperative Agreement awarded to the New York Space Grant Consortium. The program is also supported\, in part\, by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
