An Evening with Mae featuring Neir’s, Nancy Nogood, & the Museum of Drag!

August 26, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Come enjoy a screening of Mae West’s “I’m No Angel” (1933) and a drag performance by Nancy Nogood at the museum!

“When I’m good, I’m very good. But when I’m bad, I’m better” – Mae West

We are teaming up with Neir’s Tavern and the Museum of Drag to present an evening with screen legend Mae West! West got her start at Neir’s Tavern as a vaudeville act, and resided in Woodhaven as a child. Her signature one-liners and raunchy screenplays made her a star, taking her to Hollywood where she was one of the highest paid actresses of her time. She was an early advocate for queer acceptance and of the Civil Rights Movement. She supported federal anti-lynching legislation, the local NAACP chapter, and insisted on having Duke Ellington play in one of her movies. Unfortunately, censorship following the Hays Code/Production Code in the mid-1930s caused many of her films to be sanitized and disjointed. But not at King Manor!

Join us in honoring Mae West, featuring Neir’s Tavern’s “Mae West Punch” (drink tickets available at event, 21+ with I.D.), an opening drag performance by Nancy Nogood, a pop-up of the brand new Museum of Drag, and a screening of the pre-Code film, I’m No Angel (1933). Bring a picnic blanket and wear your best 1930s ensemble! Costumes are encouraged but not required.
