Thirteen years ago, Kathleen (Katie) Kilcommons McGowan let a physical therapist friend use her horse as therapeutic treatment for a child with cerebral palsy. When she saw the child’s physical and emotional connection with the animal and how his treatment accelerated, Katie knew she had found her calling. Horseability was soon born and has since grown into a well-respected, effective program for children, adults and families with special needs. By providing each participant with personal attention, the devoted staff members and volunteers contribute to the physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual growth of the riders. Year-round programs are held at the facility in Melville, and both private and semi-private lesson are offered. By using the skills of horseback riding, HorseAbility’s therapeutic riding program helps riders reach personalized therapeutic goals. A ten-month Hippotherapy program for individuals with extensive needs is also available. Hippotherapy, when used as a tool by a licensed physical, occupational, or speech therapist, promotes motor planning abilities, and mobilizes the hips, pelvis and lumbar spine. It also stimulates the central nervous system, activates weak muscles and reduces spasticity. Horseability’s goals are to improve riders’ posture, mobility, balance, function and independence. In addition to the lessons, riders are encouraged to participate in two yearly horse shows with ribbon and trophy prizes. Horseability also offers riding programs for children and adults without special needs.
