The Autistic Spectrum Service at the White Institute’s Child and Family Center was developed to address the psychological needs of children and adolescents on the autistic spectrum, as well as their families, as they confront some very specific and difficult issues. The Service offers individual psychotherapy, dyadic and small group psychotherapy, parental guidance and support, and school consultation. Although the Service works with children of all ages, it is one of but a few services that specifically targets the specific needs of older children and adolescents on the spectrum as they encounter issues pertaining to peer relationships, dating and planning for more independent lives. The White Institute was founded more than 60 years ago by a group of mental health professionals including Harry Stack Sullivan and Erich Fromm, who were dedicated to helping people effectively cope with the difficulties in their lives. Staff at the center is comprised of highly trained and licensed mental health professionals, including both social workers and psychologists. The Center is directed by senior psychologists who have administered and supervised for many years. Other services at the Child and Family Center are geared for children and adolescents who are not on the autistic spectrum. These include individual psychotherapy, parent counseling, psychiatric consultation and medication, and services to children from immigrant and refugee families.
