Established in 1973, The Child School/Legacy High School is an academically rigorous, approved non-public school. It is a supportive community serving children with special needs. The focus is on awakening children to the fact that learning is a wondrous, enjoyable activity, and that the unfamiliar presents an exciting frontier. The School believes that children learn by absorbing and reflecting the attitudes around them, that they learn through trial and error— by pushing and pulling their own world— more through suggestions than through direction. A child learns through love, through patience, through respect and through belonging. The School fervently believes in success, in integrity, in courage, in horizons within reach and most of all in that great mystery that is the self. Children and families are provided hope; a vision of a bright future. The School fulfills a vital function in New York City by serving students whose needs cannot be met elsewhere. A core part of the School’s curriculum is helping the bright students realize their potential while offering intensive remediation to fill in conceptual gaps. Children with learning disabilities and speech/language impairments are enabled to achieve their maximum intellectual and emotional development.
