Scoliosis
affects close to ten percent of the population. Although only one percent
will require surgery, the other nine percent can benefit from advances
in non-surgical treatment. The Orthopedic community continues to advocate
a “wait and see” approach to smaller curvatures despite
current research which recommends earlier intervention. Neurological
imaging and functional testing can identify which children have an increase
risk of progression. New bracing systems are now replacing the cumbersome
Boston and Charleston rigid braces. This allows physicians to recommend
earlier brace treatments. One such flexible brace called Spinecor(TM)
is completely concealable underneath clothes and allows for full freedom
of movement. The new brace uses muscle forces to reduce the severity
of the spinal curvature, while preserving muscle tone and function.
This also makes adult treatment possible. Until now, adults were told
there was nothing that could be done about their spinal curvature. Drs.
Gary Deutchman and Marc Lamantia of Scoliosis Systems of Chiropractic
LLP, in New York City, developed adult protocols that are being taught
to physicians around the world. If you or your child has been diagnosed
with scoliosis, please call their offices to see if they can help.
