The Studio School, established in 1971, educates the hearts and minds of children from preschool through 8th grade. The school was founded on the belief that children bring their entire selves to the learning process: thinking cannot be separated from emotion nor inquiry from passion. For this reason, subjects are taught in terms of their relationships to one another— students make connections, investigate and explore ideas for deeper discoveries and original insights. The teacher/student relationship is at the heart of a Studio School education, and teachers actively engage students to promote discovery of themselves and of the world around them. As creative thinkers and confident learners in an academically rigorous program, students are able to develop their talents and grow into all they are meant to be. The Studio School’s new building at 117 W. 95 St. includes a bright, airy library with computers, a science laboratory, large gymnasium, dance and music studio, sky-lit art room with a kiln for ceramics, rooftop garden, a modern kitchen to complement the School’s innovative Kitchen Science program, and a sunny outdoor yard. Twenty percent of the student body receives financial assistance.
