Hofstra University’s Reading/Writing Learning Clinic is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art literacy evaluations and literacy support services to children, adolescents and adults who seek to develop their abilities and their confidence as readers and writers, in a safe and supportive environment. Instructional services are designed to foster literacy growth and to allow learners to take risks as they develop their proficiency as readers and writers. All professional services are provided by New York State certified literacy specialists, who offer parents straightforward advice about how to support their children’s literacy growth. Affiliated with the Department of Literacy Studies, the Clinic’s reading and writing courses utilize the most current meaning-centered practices for helping learners make efficient use of effective reading and writing strategies. These sessions focus on reading and writing as meaning construction. Phonics and spelling skills are addressed and taught in the context of meaningful language study. Students are immersed in authentic reading and writing activities and programs ensure that reading and writing remains fun and meaningful. Individual or small group instruction available. The Clinic offers professional and comprehensive literacy evaluations which provide a detailed appraisal of a learner’s reading and writing strengths and needs. Evaluations are conducted by appointment only.
