Every child deserves to feel the joy of human interaction. At one time it was thought that children with severe social deficits could never feel this joy, and could learn skills only through rote repetition. Newer research is showing that that children with autism, PDD, Asperger’s, ADHD, SID (sensory integration dysfunction), and language delays, can be taught to seek out and enjoy interactions with adults and peers. They can learn to interact with warmth, respond consistently when spoken to, and stay with an interaction for long periods of time. More than learning rote language or cognitive skills, children with even severe social deficits can learn to use language joyfully to play imaginatively, interact, converse with peers, and negotiate. Receptive language, expressive language, cognitive skills, and pre-academic skills, improve dramatically as the children become motivated to learn through interaction. Skills learned during natural interactions immediately generalize to the child’s real life at home and at school. The Language for Interaction Center provides intensive play-based therapy based on a social-interactionist theory of language development and floortime principles. The child’s parents, therapists, teacher, and/or aide can receive training and ongoing supervision in providing this type of therapy, so that the child can be immersed in social interaction. In addition, one-on-one therapy, therapeutic playdates, sibling sessions, and socialization groups are offered. The Language for Interaction Center uses written goals with measurable outcomes for each child. The child’s progress is monitored with data sheets, and goals are continually updated.
