The Make-A-Wish Foundation® grants the wishes of children ages 2½-18 with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Born from the wish of a 7-year-old boy named Chris who lived his dream of becoming a police officer for a day— thanks to friends and family in the state highway patrol— Make-A-Wish has made more than 160,000 other wishes come true since that time in 1980. The Suffolk Chapter itself has granted more than 1,700 wishes to local children, with 130 of them achieved just this year. Children have become the voice of a cartoon character, attended international fashion shows, swam with dolphins and more. Eligible children can be referred for a wish by the child, a child’s parent, legal guardian, friend of the family (with permission), medical professional or social worker. In Suffolk, more than 150 active volunteers are helping to make dreams come true, while 25,000 volunteers donate their time nationwide.
